post #5,000 ^^^ Love that brown leather color

High output Tercel alternator in an HDJ81

Last addition for this set of days off. This one turned out to be a real doozy. Turns out that the "bolt right up" that I heard about wasn't exactly that easy. But there weren't any modifications that I needed to make in the end, besides swapping the pulleys.

After calling a couple of local installers, and getting quoted north of $750 for the cost, I decided to take a crack at installing my new brown seat covers from Shane. Replacing my front driver's seat has been a long time coming, as every improvement or upgrade I've made to my cruiser over the last year always seemed to be overshadowed by the raging pile of crap that I had to sit on every time I took it for a drive.

Here's the offending party:

Just God awful bad. I've had canvas covers over it for a while now, but it's still hard as a rock and just knowing how bad it looked made me sad every time i opened the door.

I started with the passenger side. Not as bad, but definitely hard and uncomfortable:

This is definitely a tedious process, but not an impossible one. I spent the morning learning a good bit on this one. Here's the after (I still have some additional work to do to finish it up):

Yesterday evening all I had time for was the bane of my existence--the bottom seat driver's cushion. I ordered a new OEM cushion from Shane as well, and it was drastically different from the old one. It also made installation a bit more challenging as well:

Hopefully I can finish the driver's seat back today or tomorrow. My next challenge is replacing the leather on the back of the 2 seats. I know that I've at least seen a picture of someone glueing and clamping to do that process, but I've been unable to find that thread this weekend to see if there's any explanation on how to do that properly. Does anyone know the thread i'm talking about, or have any advice on how to do that?

Big thanks to Shane and those other members who did write ups on how to install. Very helpful. What an awesome product and upgrade.

Damn that looks good. I should get mine redone. But the price though.

Radio setup

What's the setup?

Kenwood TMV71A with a Comet SBB7NMO Antenna. Remote mounted the head unit above the mirror with the base below the drivers seat. Have the antenna on a Comet hatch mount that rotates on 3 planes to allow for adjustments when the hatch is up or when off-road

Wheeling! Followed a snowmobile trail quite a ways and found some beautiful views. Only had trouble with that last part, that hill was pretty darn steep and icy under the snow! Maybe a winch in the future after all...:hhmm:

That's my to do list. Going to tackle it once the snow clears and it's no longer needed as DD.

Oil change and back and forth to ski hill multiple times.

This wasn't a groomed snowmobile trail you were driving on, right?

Nope, groomed stuff is no fun, plus the snowmobile bridges can't take the weight, and the truck would usually mess up the trail pretty bad. Not worth the hard feelings unless we(FD) have to use them to get out there and rescue somebody. Should have said snowmobile track I guess, as there had been some sleds through there.

Unplowed roads and logging trails that day, and the recent rain has got everything frozen up really solid. Air down just a touch and you can run along right on top. Kinda anticlimactic unless you get sideways on a hill like I did there. Then it gets interesting quick...took me nine tries to get up that hill. Almost bought a new bumper at one point...

Good stuff, looks like a fun trail!

@TDavidson yupp its been very challenging. hopefully i finish this weekend. Ill show u a link on this dude that did it. He had great dire tions and steps. Im following what hes doing too. Be careful not to strip any of the oil pumo bits. They are #3 philips screws. Before you try to undo them, clean it real good, and hammer your #3ph into that hole real good. Last night i tried and i stripped 2 already without getting sny out. Today im gonna take off the harmonic balancer using his method but will try it with my 1/2 torque wrench and 30mm socket.... here i go. And also check his video out,

I finally got to bring it home!! After waiting for a transport company to pick it up, and waiting, and waiting, an opportunity came up that I couldn't pass up (work related travel). Instead of flying home, I flew to my truck and drove 1998 miles home! (~3200km) left Saturday morning and got home Monday afternoon. Loving it!

Averaged about 14.5 mpg, not bad for a lifted 80, with 33" BFG MT and a roof rack...

Now the to-do list starts!

Cheapest gas I could find...

That is quite an interesting rear spoiler/deck, haven't seen one like that before. Congrats on getting it home!

Where did you drive it from? And, the rear spoiler, any idea where that came from? OEM ?

Thanks guys, no idea on the spoiler, but it does a great job of keeping the rear window clean. I'll see if I can find any markings on it. Wondering if it's off a hilux surf?

Drove from New Mexico to Ontario, just north of Syracuse, NY. Probably one of only a very few Rust free cruisers in Canada!

No, Hilux Surf is a lot smaller than an 80.

I've seen them on other 80's before.

Passed smog test with a p0401 in SoCal for the second time! Cleared it with the scangauge.
