Passed my emissions test, one step closer to registration and plates! Stopped on the way home and bought some Rubbermaid floor mats, and new wipers all around.
Then I Started "going through" it. People, if you're not able to do electrical work, please, for the sake of everyone.... Just don't. Get someone who has the ability to do it!
I pulled about 15' of wire nest out, which was not connected to anything at either end. I also found 4 wires coming from the cabin into the engine compartment, that are not connected to anything in the engine compartment (nice of them to fish those through for me!)
I also re crimped the main ground cable, which was COMPLETELY separated (see pic!), I don't know how the truck ran! Everything was going through the skinny body ground I guess!! So, trimmed the cable back 1/2" properly crimped a new lug on (not using vice grips), and presto (nothing changed!) but at least now I know it's connected!
When I bought the truck, the PO told me that the PS low beam didn't work, and it was a loose wire. Well, yeah, you could say it was a loose wire. Someone installed depots, and TWISTED the wires onto the bulb spades!! I cut a bulb fitting off my parts 60 and spliced it into the harness with heat shrink butt connectors. Presto, lights work!
PO also told me that he ran with the high beams on all the time, and that the lights kind of sucked. Well, when you install headlights you need to AIM them! (I think this was the PPO, not the PO) Much better now that they are aimed more than 12' away from the truck!
Next I lifted the truck on the hoist so I could measure for new shocks. The truck bounces around a lot, like the shocks are about 20 years old, though they look fairly new. Well, I suppose if all 4 shocks had been connected, it might have been ok, but BOTH of the drivers side shocks were only connected at one end, and completely compressed!! Someone half-assed a bunch of stuff on this truck!!! Drivers side front shock attached at the top but not the bottom, drivers side rear, attached at the bottom and not the top!! It's been like that for a while, and I will need to chase the threads and find some new nuts and washers.
Next thing I noticed was that the axle breathers both popped off when I lifted the truck, so I guess I need to extend them, and oh man I think the axles were hanging from the brake lines! Sheesh!
At the same time, a buddy came over to repair the overhead display in his tacoma. Stealership quoted him $1700 for a new display and console. We fixed it for about $0.03 worth of solder. Works perfectly.
