It’s always nice to get a little affirmation that our hobby isn’t a complete money pit.


Just out of curiosity—the article mentioned "#2" and "#3" condition vehicles. Some of us may own 80s in similar shape, but how many are truly stock? And how much does being modified (i.e., not stock) actually impact the vehicle’s value?


Most of us actually use and enjoy our 80s—they’re not just garage queens (assuming we’re lucky enough to have a garage in the first place!).


I suppose the basic law of supply and demand ultimately determines their value.

Installed the OVS Nomadic 270° Awning on a BowFin Rack — easy peasy with the help of my brother.
Also installed a backup camera on my Avid bumper and connected it to the head unit.

Finally got around to doing most of the LX450 phone delete. Way back when I replaced the stereo head unit and speakers, I removed the transceiver but left the speaker relay and the silver box in the driver-side rear cargo area.
As often happens, I connected the two remaining plugs (T-9 and T-8) together, expecting everything to just work — and it didn’t. All the speakers went silent. The speaker box connected to the amp was the only one putting out sound, but only for a few seconds before the head unit threw an error message and shut off.
At that point, I thought I had killed my whole system. More than a few choice words were said.

Turns out, I had forgotten to pull the 15A “Tel” fuse in the under-hood fuse box. Once I removed it — problem solved. DOH!

From what I've seen, the value of the 80 series isn't negatively impacted by mods or deviating from stock the way a classic car might be. The ones I've seen go for the most money have at least all the "basic" mods you'd expect like replacement bumpers, roof racks, after-market suspension, big tires, etc. That being said, triple factory lockers demands a higher price than after-market lockers, it would seem.

I spent 2.5h yesterday trying to change the oil/filter as a part of baselining my new to me 80. Oil was easy. Filter's still in there. Tried every trick in the book and it just wasn't my day. I think the PO must've tightened the old one to 200 ft/lbs or something. Back at it this afternoon.

Keep at it. Mine was cranked on there by someone with inhuman strength or a lot of pent up energy. I closed my eyes and pictured myself as a distressed mother, whose baby was stuck inside the oil filter. And with that a sudden surge of adrenaline came over me and I ended up swapping in a new short block. Ooooor…
I ended up using a screwdriver and poking it in the middle of the filter and using that to help unscrew it. Good luck.

Finally got the h55f installed! I initially did my manual swap last year and just did an h42 4 speed from a 60, it was much cheaper and definitely fun and cool. It was an adventure figuring it out in my back yard and making the parts I needed. Learned a lot! Since then we’ve decided to downsize our cars and this 80 will go from “weekend fun truck” to daily driver. So being able to go highway speeds was a need for sure. Sold a project cruiser and my local Toyota dealer had a killer sale going on, so I snagged a brand new one. It went right in after mating it to the split case. First drive into work today with it and wow, what a joy to drive!

It’s just in a bad spot and hard to get any kind of filter wrench on it or any leverage.
The first time I thought a gorilla must have put it on. But since then I always just snug it up and it seems to glue itself on.
The last time I was running out of time to go on a run and I just left it

Made it to Newfoundland!

Uneventful 1,600 mile trip, except for a nasty valve cover leak. I pinched the gasket last week while troubleshooting my misfire (bad injector) issue.

Picked up some parts locally and fixed it with a view.

Camp tonight was at Cape St. George.

Got in last night from a 2500 mile round trip between Colorado and Washington, point being to drive with and drop off my newly-permitted son with his best friend 1200 miles away, and socialize the new pup. Avoided interstates almost completely, boondocked nearly everywhere (#handsoffpubliclands) and just disconnected. Year 15 with the 80 and not a single hiccup on the trip other than I finally have a shaky mirror. One unplanned benefit to sticking to side roads, I was rarely above 70mph, so averaged a touch over 15mpg for the whole trip.

Time for one of these? Only changed the oil once with it, but it is ohhh so nice! Ford racing filter, there is a bushing you can buy so you use the standard Toyota filters which I also installed.

Here is the link to the original thread by @Kernal. The part# I used was M-6880-B50. I can't find the receipt for the new bung, I think the part was listed in the tread. If not this one, I do recall another thread. Will keep looking.

I found success yesterday afternoon, although not without a little more consternation. New filter on and all is well with the world. Now, onto the seat slide mechanisms.....

I was surprised to see how little of a premium the tres locked rigs demanded according to their research honestly. Something like $1800 IIRC? I can add lockers for that!

I disagree with them that factory lockers are worth more. Aftermarket lockers are much more reliable at this point.
