Another #6 head gasket failure 270k miles. “Edit” 311k miles customer I sold a motor to said it was still running strong and no signs of failure he just felt like it was down on power. Good intuition!!

If it was just a little down in power how did you diagnose it as the head gasket? Curious as my 97 seems a little down on power with 286k. Just did 3600 miles with it last week.

First to me maintenance for my newly acquired FZJ80. Changed oil and filer...filter was your basic nightmare I've been reading about. F and R diffs, transfer case drained and new fluid, Dobinson steering damper. Will be tackling the front and rear sway bar bushings tomorrow. Good fun to be had!

I did not diagnose. The gentleman wanted to refresh his cruiser and decided to buy a rebuilt motor and swap it in.

There are numerous ways to diagnose a head gasket, you can do a compression test and if you have low compression on cylinders that are next to each other that's a good indication. You can do a hydrocarbon test and test the cooling system for engine gases. You can do a sniff test on the tailpipe and test it for coolant.

You can assume it'll happen and prepare. If it does, congrats. If it does, you're ready. But it's a common thing.
238,500 when mine let go, #6 as many have encountered.

Loss of coolant in the over bottle tipped me off, leak down confirmed the diagnosis. It was running fine.

Oil analysis (like Blackstone) will usually tell you you have a failure as well with coolant/ hydrocarbons in the oil sample.

Good call. Wish I had thought of that a few hours ago, as I just changed the oil. :/
