If it was just a little down in power how did you diagnose it as the head gasket? Curious as my 97 seems a little down on power with 286k. Just did 3600 miles with it last week.Another #6 head gasket failure 270k miles. “Edit” 311k miles customer I sold a motor to said it was still running strong and no signs of failure he just felt like it was down on power. Good intuition!!

238,500 when mine let go, #6 as many have encountered.You can assume it'll happen and prepare. If it does, congrats. If it does, you're ready. But it's a common thing.
Loss of coolant in the over bottle tipped me off, leak down confirmed the diagnosis. It was running fine.There are numerous ways to diagnose a head gasket, you can do a compression test and if you have low compression on cylinders that are next to each other that's a good indication. You can do a hydrocarbon test and test the cooling system for engine gases. You can do a sniff test on the tailpipe and test it for coolant.
