Was excited to get out and wheeling with
@JacobDewey22 and his newly acquired LX450 on 40s. He bought the truck and drove it straight back from Redmond and met me in Aspen.
We ended up doing Taylor Pass. When climbing up the pass on the Aspen side which is pretty mild, his truck started running pretty hot. It was manageable for most the drive up (low 200s to 215) but towards the top it started getting a pretty damn hot (low to high 220s). It was running in the 220s right as we hit the summit, and parking it into the wind it cooled right down back to 186.
We thought that would be the worst of it as it was now the air temperature was cooling off for the day, and it was all downhill. And for the first half of the descent it was doing just fine. Then of course, right when the trail got gnarly it started getting really hot really fast. We took the hood off it as we thought it was a lack of airflow issue. The fan clutch was clearly shot not moving much air at all. Taking the hood off did nothing, and about 1-2 minutes after running it would instantly get really hot.
He was running the heater most of the day when it was running hot but at some point on the descent the heater stopped blowing hot air.
At this point I figured thermostat and since we had a spare, we decided to throw one in. We put it in and tried to bleed the system the best we could for where we were but still, no luck.
We did our best to remedy the situation, just letting it cool then nurse it down the trail, rinse and repeat.
He lives in Gunnison and the most efficient thing for us to do was to get the truck to Gunnison where it is at his place and safe.
Eventually we got it down the pass and made it to the dirt road that connects to Taylor Park, and Gunnison. We threw a strap on my truck and I dragged him the 40 some odd miles into town and got his truck back safely.
Quite the adventure and we had fun, but big bummer for him and the truck. I hope it’s an easy solution. It’s clear it needs a new fan clutch, and it has a aftermarket radiator cap that needs to be switched. The radiator looks newish. But I think at this point he should just redo the whole cooling system and start from scratch.
