I bought it that way. '96 with 140k for $2k. First LC and I'm loving it so far! Tons of plans for it, just throwing it together as the money comes in!

140k on a '96 for $2k is an awesome deal even despite that damage.

What are your suspension plans now that you're sitting on 37s?

Got the brake hoses replaced. Now the brake pedal is extremely soft and spongy. The guy at the shop bled the lines.

I have to take it back tomorrow and recheck it. It also looks to me like he got the rear frame to axle hose in the front (DS). Gotta have them reversed too.

Thank you!

I have been looking at Slee kits but I'm not 100% sure on anything yet. I'm thinking 2.5"-3" lift. I have some other plans for a roof rack, tent, bumpers and some LED lighting.

Next to come will probably be Line-X interior. (It had a nasty water leak that damaged the carpet in the passenger floor board.) Also debating going flareless.

Definitely depends on your application but most people go more than 2.5-3" to clear 37s. You will get a lot of rubbing in most off camber situations.

Lol but I hear you, seems like you have the bug. Prioritizing upgrades is never easy.

Found the problem.

The guy did not tighten up correctly one of the hoses. It squirts brake fluid out.

I dropped off my 93 along with all new rear bushings and front and rear driveshaft u joints. Left it with him yesterday (and asked him to change them out at his convenience) and have been driving my 92. I really like the 3FE. Anyway, my 92 rides so nice compared to the 93. This thing just really never got any love from the PO. Picked up the 93 this afternoon. $75 for labor. And rides like a dream. Almost as good as my 92.

The leather power seats still suck. Just flat out awful seats. For those of you that think they aren't bad you haven't ridden in a 91-92 with cloth. Just can't beat it. I can't wait to put my spare set of manual cloth seats in my 93.

I might have missed this but who did you take it to. Local? I'd be interested in having something like this done on my 96.

My buddy owns the AAMCO Transmission here in Cedar Rapids. I'll PM you.

I agree which is why I do almost all the work myself with few exceptions. Setting up gears is not a job I'm 100% comfortable with on my own, even though I helped do the setup on my FJ40 and my mini truck. I guess this just motivates me to get comfortable doing gears too.

Yeah, although I didn't do my own gears either. I don't have any experience with that, nor do I have the special tools. After doing a lot of research online it looks like much of setting the gear backlash is "feel," which requires experience that again, I lack. But I saved a bunch and learned a lot by doing everything BUT the gear setup. For example, I realized that I had previously installed a couple of the front axle gaskets in the wrong order and I hadn't previously set up preload correctly. But in slowing down and doing it totally solo with my FSM, I was able to get it dialed in just right. As much as I trust the gear job the shop did, they're a general offroad shop; they're not Toyota specialists. They've done lots of gear installs on Jeeps, Runners, Rovers, and others, so I let them do what they're best at, and I did the rest.

Here's my $.05 worth of free advice after playing with suspension setups. I finally got exactly the lift I want with room for 37s by using OME heavies in the front with a 1" spacer from Slee, OME mediums in the back (I don't have a bumper and generally run light) with no spacer, 3-degree bushings from Slee, and a 1" body lift from Roger Brown. A 1" BL doesn't seem like much but it really was the finishing touch for me.

Naturally, your preferences may be different. I couldn't justify the massive price of Slee's 4" or 6" lifts, though I can certainly see the appeal. But in talking with the guys there, once you go beyond 2.5" - 3" in suspension lift you enter a whole new world of additional stuff to do. (Panhards, different drive shafts, etc.)

Good luck with the build!

PS - On going flareless... If you do any real wheeling, the rig will eventually de-flare itself. Mine did so I pulled them and just inserted some black nylon trim plugs in all the holes. My rig is dark so it really isn't that noticeable. I'll ultimately weld and Monsta-line the exterior, hopefully next spring. But I've come to really like the cleaner lines of the de-flared rigs anyway.

Pulled the 36x12.5r16 TSL Radials off my Tacoma and put them on the 80 yesterday, Tacoma is getting a new set of Falken AT/3W's in a 315/75r16. One of these weekends I'll finish the front bumper and start on the rear.

Take a look at the Stage 1 Slinky/Icon suspension from Redline Land Cruisers. It will keep you right around the 3" and it has been a massive difference from my OME stuff.

Adam- can you elaborate on "massive difference"?

I've run several different suspension set ups over the years and always felt that my at the time biggest offered OME Heavy 3" was one of the best I ever ran...

In fact I'm seriously considering going back on OME coils.

I can, and will but I'm late for a meeting. I'll try to respond more this evening. Also, keep on eye out for the latest issue of TCT Magazine, which should be available any day now. There is a full review that I wrote on this that should be in the new issue.
