What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (39 Viewers)

Well this has taken more than the weekend but has cleared many projects all at once even if it took a month. First thing, gut interior, apply sound deadener (no 20% rule here, rule was cover it if I could reach it). I then added a layer (in some cases two) of heat insulator called EZ Cool, this has reduced interior heat around the transmission tunnel and front passenger side dramatically. This was where two layters of EZ Cool were applied. I used aluminized duct tape to hold down the EZ Cool. I also ran new wires, distribution blocks, new fuse box in the drivers back quarter, new amp in the passenger quarter, new speakers, HU and powered sub. Along with the new stereo I of course had to add a backup camera and ran new wiring for my rear LED's. I have a buddy with access to a waterjet so I had him cut my brackets out of 1/8" aluminum. Cannot forget about my new tailgate storage from socallove, of course it is lined on the inside as well.

This is very nice. I have vinyl flooring to replace my carpet and was going to pull the carpet this weekend but decided to wait a few weeks until I have a better game plan for what all I want to run to the back. And of course sound deadener and heat shield. This helps tremendously.

I may end up pulling the second and third row areas of carpet and start cleaning. Did you power wash it to get it nice and clean or just blow it out?

Odd, the OEM radiator cap lasted me about a year. Both gaskets are completely swollen and the smaller has a little piece missing. No issues because of it but it's odd that it wouldn't last very long.

You think it was only a year old but maybe it got swapped with the cap from my 93 "accidentally"...

I forgot that you were with me when I picked up the radiator cap. Dangit.

This is very nice. I have vinyl flooring to replace my carpet and was going to pull the carpet this weekend but decided to wait a few weeks until I have a better game plan for what all I want to run to the back. And of course sound deadener and heat shield. This helps tremendously.

I may end up pulling the second and third row areas of carpet and start cleaning. Did you power wash it to get it nice and clean or just blow it out?

This cleaned it up really nice, then just vacuumed real well and started laying down the deadener. I highly recommend the EZ Cool closed cell insulation, it is thin enough to replace the OEM jute backing and it forms fairly easily. Two layers in the most high heat areas and you will be good to go. I also cut out and replaced the vinyl/plastic barrier behind the door cards with a layer of EZ Cool and taped it down with the aluminum tape. It is far away much quieter than before.

I'm not overly concerned about sound. I like the rugged/utilitarian feel of my 80s. Plus I have other areas I need to spend money (like paint!). This one is my toy/DD/overlander/camping/canoe hauler. She gets abused a little bit.

If consider putting sound deadening in my 92. She's my baby.

Unfortunately 80's aren't old enough yet to where rust-free frames are in high demand. I still have the axles and steering box though that will definitely see use.

This part right here is where it got real fun left was a nice drop off I didn't feel comfortable doing without sliders, rear bumper, or under armor. Right was foot deep holes not easy but was as hard on the 80 as it was a Heep and a older Taco. Problem is I went July 4th weekend and as soon as I went around the corner there were 5-6 rigs coming wit no where to pull put of the way. I went to go back to this spot and 2 Heeps were sitting in my spot. Looks like it's far left for me. I used my hitch as a skid plate and got to back/slide up on it to let um pass. s*** got tight. A little Taco came up and while his spotter is almost yelling " Driver driver driver driver driver" he decided to stay his line! Luckily he left a small scuff on the back by the tail light where as he got a 3x15 gouge in his fender flare. Rest made it thru fine.

Last weekend, drove out to Truckee/Donner are of Lake Tahoe for the 4th. The 80 handled Donner Pass like a champ! I was able to maintain 60-65 without really pushing hard most of the time. Fully loaded with 3 bikes, a tandem kayak, ARB fridge full of food/beer and all our other stuff for the week.

It was guzzling down the gas though. Even with my auxiliary gas tank the range gets pretty limited when you're climbing long grades at high elevation. At least I know the altimeter works...

I love driving this beast!
