Very interesting. I always thought the test thing would be a pain. I guess I should consider that, thanks.

All I did was watch these videos and took practice test on QRZ.com

Never opened a book:hillbilly:

Just wrapped up what was, in my opinion, a major ordeal. Full front axle service. Took me 4 days. About $1100 in parts and fluids. Cleaned EVERYTHING.

While everything's clean, take the opportunity to paint some white marks on the knuckle studs and nuts so you can glance down and see if anything is backing off. Lots of people report problems AFTER a rebuild.. even with lots of attention to detail getting everything right.

View attachment 1274406 Finished unloading from last weeks epic 4 day rubicon trip where I took no pics because I left my phone on the back of my trailer at Loon lake! After three weeks strait of cruiser reconstruction after rollover (far from finished) is nice to take a break from it. I learned that it's possible, but hard to believe, that I could actually get tired of spending time with my triple locked mistress.

Pretty much where I was at.. especially with all of the extra wiring work I had to do combining the 94 chassis/engine to 97 body/dash harness. 5 months and I was very ready to be done. But, big push to get it complete for last week's UT/CO and everything did great.. Other than me almost rolling the truck AGAIN. Now I can take a break and slowly fiddle with the remainder of the OCD list.

Side note.. I was averaging 15mpg at 70mph on the freeway.. I'm certain the part-time kit helped that to some extent. Drawback? no center diff means the truck is much more likely to plow straight ahead in a very tight downhill turn in deep sand.. almost making you roll off a very high, very steep trail. I BARELY got out of that. And it is making me seriously consider a rear winch. My front mount did ZERO good in that situation.

Sound advice. I'll do it. Thanks.

Part time is relatively new maybe 93+ before then part time was all we had.:meh: Also given the conditions you should of been in 4WD anyway, right?

Just one more great thing about our 80 series is the pin 7 mod enabling center diff disengagement while in low range for those situations requiring the tightest turning radius possible or the one that @bloc found himself in. This is why I see now true advantage to going part time.

A part time 80 will turn sharper than a full time with center diff disengagement, I experience it all the time as @bloc does being part time. Plus in deep, steep sand you want to be in 4WD so you can turn was my point.

Extended weekend; we've been out there again, this time with the usual summer vehicular lineup:

It's been fairly empty, we saw one bike all afternoon

And I can't believe my 13-year old Radio Shack CB radio is about to give up and die... but that's how it sounds like.

Finally took Duchess out with the new ICONS and I will let you know that they are amazing. They are valved for a fully equipped rig (front/rear bumpers, roof rack, spare tire and winch) and even on my bone stock lx450 the ride is surreal. This kit has completely transformed my 80's ride from jolty and wayward to collected and composed. I thought it was fun to drive and cruiser around in before.... Cheers to Icon Vehicle Dynamics, well done!!!

Hell yes!! TJM Yulara RTT. I picked this up from Brian at Mud Connection 4x4 in Little Rock. Brian has 2 80's out there that are awesome. I installed this thing in just a couple of hours or less by myself. Pretty easy to make it to where it opens off of the back. The lift gate and tailgate can lift easily and are covered by the back half of the tent. I have the Medium OME lift and 1"spacers in the front and I can't tell a difference with clearance.

Prepping for a Kings Canyon run. Got the Fox shocks installed! Maybe I'm a crappy makeshift mechanic, but removing the OME shocks and installing the Foxes was NOT as easy as some make it seem. That was a PITA IMO! The result in handling IS as good as reported by others. The handling is night and day compared to the old shocks...WELL WORTH IT!!

Did you mean "no" true advantage? If so I'd disagree, this one strange situation excluded.

Actually it was the other way around. I'm pretty sure having the front and rear axles locked together prevented the truck from turning tightly. It was a very steep, very tight turn in very soft sand. Steep enough that I didn't feel comfortable in 2wd. the truck just wouldn't turn, even with both diff locks disengaged. The truck just plowed ahead with the wheels at full-lock left. My experience before the part-time kit is that with a center diff the truck would have turned sharper due to the xfer case allowing a difference in distance traveled between the front axle and rear.

I was already at 12 psi so unwilling to go lower..

reversing straight provided no movement back up the hill.

What did end up working was full lock right, low range, hard on the throttle in reverse. The truck pivoted CCW in place (no uphill movement) to be in-line with the trail, and allow me to get down without rolling sideways for 200 feet. I was actually thinking that it is probably a good thing I rebuilt the front end as my old birfs were clicking loudly enough to potentially have issues with that manouver.

Next time I'll (carefully) disengage the front driveline just for the extremely tight turn. Still glad I part-timed, personally.

I had a local mechanic rebuild the power steering pump using the Gates Toyota PS Rebuild Kit. Changed the oil and filter. Replaced the belts. $443 including parts, labor, tax and tip. I'm ready to hit the trails again.

That's funny, I just found time to post also...
Yeah, it was my birthday wheelin trip. I had a blast with @ToyotaDon & @socallove .

Fixed my wiper arms that came loose. (Yay, wipers work again)

Attempted my first fix at sanding, bondo, and painting on a old rusted scratch from the PO. Apparently hoodrats attempted to steal the LC badge and gouged a 6" flathead screwdriver scratch down the hatch. All was going well until the painting.... Guess I'll have to sand and paint again... Damn it.

However, I did add another sticker thanks to @beno
