Driving back from Colorado in the dark at 11:30 PM I failed to see a sign. I probably had 1/2 tank of gas (on the indicator) at this point.
The light came on with 40 miles to go before services.
I discovered that in the exact conditions I was driving in, I am able to traverse exactly 320 miles. At that point, the engine stops producing power.
I saw it coming... the light came on, found a sign indicating next gas 32 miles after the light had been on for about 15. There was nothing I could do by the time I saw the light and I tried drafting a semi truck to save fuel. The truck driver started (understandably) getting pissy about that though and tapping his brakes at random. Coasted down the hills. 6 miles short of Salina, UT the cruiser ran out of gas.
Had just bought two 5 gallon plastic Jerry's at Costco a couple of days before, but had not filled them up.

I grabbed one and a flashlight and started walking. After about 5 minutes, a guy in a van with a kayak on top stopped and asked if I needed a ride. I did. He was a very interesting fellow who liked incense and vitamins a lot. I got in and there was only a drivers seat available for traditional vehicular seating, but there was a foot stool in the passenger area so I sat on that and held on. He mentioned that he was taking his dog to his dad's house for the summer while he worked a seasonal job (fire fighting). I looked in the back and saw a very large doberman sleeping on a bed in the back of the van. Nice doggy. The dog only woke up once and he just yawned at me. I tried not to look at the vitamin rack or the incense burner (or anything) too closely. But the man gave me a ride to the gas station and took me back to the cruiser with my full jerry can.
Kind stranger, I'll pay it forward it next time I see someone that needs gas now that i have two full jerry cans.
