Par for the course with the KZ family of engines. Luckily everything is still available for them including new cylinder heads.... Head's are available here in the US for quite a reasonable amount of money: 11101-69128. 3 available in the US.

That's almost cheap enough to buy and have on the self just in-case.

An intercooler setup is high on my list of things to do on this truck along with an EGT gauge because of the potential issues. I too am wondering what issues he was having that prompted the test.

@TheEngineer same here. I'm actually going to install a diy intercooler setup next week. I am following Epaul's Diy setup on his kzj that looked pretty good and was really inexpensive. I've already done a manual boost controller, boost and egt gauges. I've had my egt gauge on for a few weeks now, so looking forward to comparing numbers after the intercooler is installed. I still have the stock exhaust which isnt doing me any good either. All in due time.

Someone I follow on instagram is supposedly trying to get kits made for these trucks. He used a vibrant IC that's off the shelf and the piping looks really simple. I believe he was able to do it without drilling through front the core support.

How are your egts? I'm waiting to do that mod as well and I've always wondered what normal operating temps look like. I've cruised at 80-90mph for hours and the water temp never rose to the halfway mark, it's been a great first diesel car for us.

Thank you to @AirheadNut for confirming my wheel bearing was bad and to @cruiserdan for recommending Cruiser Outfitters for the parts. I called less than an hour before close on Friday and they made a custom kit for me to do just the front wheel bearings on my electric hub Kzj78. Package arrived on Monday too.

I used this thread: LJ78 Prado Axle Service How-to and these videos DIY toyota landcruiser 70 series front wheel bearings , 70 Series Landcruiser - How to Repack Front Wheel Bearings for references. The package from Cruiser Outfitters also came with a great print out of how to do everything.

Took way too long to do this side but it was a first for me.

The keen eyed of you will notice loose rollers sitting here. This is right after removing it. The inner race of the outer bearing broke but was holding its shape while on the spindle. This was probably the noise I heard hahaha.

I always thought the cruiser just had squishy brakes when we bought it. They’re so much firmer after replacing these parts and it actually brakes like a new car. I was able to move the rotor by hand before this and we’re all good now.

I went up to the mountains last weekend which is about a 15 mile climb up until you reach 6,000 feet. going with traffic i was hovering 900-1200 depending on the speed/situation. I have my egt gauge alarm set to 1200. so it went off a handful of times and I let off a bit. My water temp gauge stays in the middle without fluctuating so i cant really comment on my coolant temps.


Next week the intercooler project starts. I also just ordered a 3'' dump pipe from KRAE 4x4. once that comes in I'll be doing a 3'' exhaust.

Hoping intercooler and exhaust will keep her running happy.

K0shi808 is the one I'm thinking of, sounds like we've looked at the same pictures lol. KRAE 4x4 is that small company out of NZ right? I'd love to hear what you think of their DP when you get your hands on it. I've wanted to do the same and I'm between a side exit exhaust vs following the normal path.

Id be cautious about being able to tell anything from a factory water temp gauge on these trucks, by the time its in the red (or even near it) you can be way way too hot already

Do your wheel spacers have enough thread engagement? Pics make it look it lil sketchy.

Had the same thought on just having one sitting on the shelf. Maybe after all the other preventative maintenance is done. Luckily that list is getting things crossed off quicker than things added to it.

A good reminder of a well documented build. And that slipping in an intercooler doesn't have to be rocket surgery.

Not sure if this project qualifies as something to post here, but why not?!

We are building my son‘s first car here at the shop. It’s a 1959FJ 25 with 70 series axles along with an H55F 5-speed and split case.

We decided on the 70 series axles because we wanted disc brakes in the front, 9.5 inch diff front and rear as well as a full float rear axle with drums and incorporated emergency brake.

The primary purpose for this vehicle is so it can be a daily driver, as well as driven to any destination, for camping, offloading, or whatever other purpose, and then driven back.

Since we are building this car from scratch, everything is being fully rebuilt. The vehicle will run 33 inch tires and a set of the terrain tamer parabolic springs and suspension components. Given the tire size and engine and transmission combination, we opted for 3.70 differential gears along with Harrop electric lockers for their simplicity and ultimate reliability.

Both axles were rebuilt using Terrain Tamer components; knuckle kit, diff rebuild kits, lockers, wheel bearing kits and upgraded brakes.
