So why can Tigris do 85 comfortably? You can get the "ride" dialed in so it "feels" good, with suspension, tire selection, and brake work, but asking an old 1Hz to push a loaded troopy at 80-85 on the interstate is pretty unrealistic.

First step was to build a table to work on. This old metal desk worked just fine.

@TheEngineer ,
I agree with that assessment, having driven a 2F long time ago I remember how the struggle was real. I do frequently drive modern 70s and other Cruisers so I have a feel for how these modern trucks drive at interstate speeds. That being said, other than hovering around the 3k mark on the tachometer, the 1KZ-TE feels right at home on the interstate and the truck does indeed feel less jittery at that speed range. I happen to have 33" tires on now and that seemed helpful at keeping the tac around the 2700 mark at these high speeds. Passing just about every kind of vehicle with an old 70 is trippy too
Cheers
I think @OGBeno answered your question best, but I will add, if you bought an NA 1Hz troopy expecting to do 80-85 you might have bought the wrong truck. Sure, you might be able to, but your fuel economy is going to suck and you better have those upgraded brakes. That is not at all what these truck were designed for, or are good at.So why can Tigris do 85 comfortably?
Some more intel from @wngrog in a smaller, lighter Hzj73:So why can Tigris do 85 comfortably?
The test drive to the car wash and through town then back home went great. It was only a 25K loop but the brakes got seasoned and I got to see how the stinker likes the 285/75-17s on the road.

110 indicated was a sweet spot for the truck. It seems to like 2500 RPM kinda like a 2F does

I snuck it up to 120 indicated and that’s about all she wrote with this setup. It’s not working it at these RPMs it just runs out of umph (ac is also blasting)

The FJCruiser 4” BS wheels with these tires just clears the TREs and wheel weights but i could tell the limited driving I did pre axle rebuild that the rear tires had rubbed the inner wheel well/tub and the exhaust. I added the 1” spacers and everything seems happy and I like the stance.
UMark: It's a completely different engine. He has a KZ family engine while you have a HZ family engine. Quite radically different.
I have no need or desire to go over 65mph. I was just curious as to the reasons their truck was able to do 80 or 85 without issue.I think @OGBeno answered your question best, but I will add, if you bought an NA 1Hz troopy expecting to do 80-85 you might have bought the wrong truck. With 4:1 Tcase gears and the associated 10% underdrive, I drive more to RPMs than speed. 67/68/69 is the sweet spot for me @2600 rpms, I can go faster but fuel economy starts to decline quickly over the 70 mph mark. I'm on 35s and I think my troopy has great road manners compared to my 99 Tacoma and 97 T100, but I really wouldn't want to go faster. I think if you get everything in order (steering, brakes, suspension, cooling) you could very easily be comfortable cruising at 70-75. Beyond that I would be looking at an engine upgrade and a big brake mod.
Looks great! I’ve been eying the same style… I just can’t find a company to ship them to the US. Where did you snag yours from?
They will ship them to you via a secondary company called Australian Trading Services Pty Ltd, they handle the international sales for FRP. scott@australiantrading.comLooks great! I’ve been eying the same style… I just can’t find a company to ship them to the US. Where did you snag yours from?
I'm a bit scared to ask but how'd you end up with the Camp Pendleton Brige

Day one with the 33", I noticed a slight decrease in my launch acceleration leaving the shop. This is splitting hairs mind you, and my perception of it faded away before I made it back home that morning. The 1KZ-TE taking off on four new sticky 33"s inflated to 30psi is more than adequate for city driving surrounded by impatient drivers and frequent red lights. The truck came from Japan with 29" tires and that made it almost too nimble for my taste. I believe that you will be happy with the balance between highway and city performance going with the 33x11.5.The 60 is never leaving our possession and the KZJ78 is starting to look the same, even if we end up getting a troopy or truck in the future. I came from modifying other cars and the potential of the 1KZ has me wanting to increase the boost to see what it'll do.
How is yours off the line with the 33" tires? Ours seem slightly too small and that would be the next size up for us.
Troopies are shaped like a brick and taller and heavier then any other 7x model . With the 1HZ the sweet spot for cruising in a troopy seems to be 65-68 mph in most of the ones I have owned . Now if you swap to a 1hdt or ft you can add 5 mph to that cruising speed but at long drives I found myself being around 70 mph with my ft powered troopy . Way better mpg then cruising at 80 mph and much more relaxed drivingOk.... so I have to ask... I have a 1HZ (non turbo) Troopy with a 5 speed manual and 70mph really seems to be the top end (as determined by the way it "feels") I'm going to be swapping to ATs instead of MT tires and dropping in an all new springs and shocks etc ... maybe it's the "ride" as it is now that's making it feel like it does?
Am I off base?
Also is Tigris verifying his speed on a gps or on the optimistic cluster ?So why can Tigris do 85 comfortably?
Thanks for your cervix debil. So there I was… (Cue Mission Impossible theme)
Actually, I worked on Pendleton in a building that was formerly a brig. When it was converted into office space years ago, the old building sign somehow managed to end up in the back of my cruiser one day. Been hanging in my garage or on the shop wall ever since.
Mine is GPS verified and the tach isn't far off. Big fan of the 1kz-te so far. Also is Tigris verifying his speed on a gps or on the optimistic cluster ?
