I truly believe smaller tires at low pressure deform to rocks and grip better than larger tires do.

So long as you have the clearance to get over the rocks :D

Took the family camping/hiking at the Grand Canyon… we “glamped” by staying in a Conestoga Wagon at a KOA. We had a blast, though froze our butts off.

I ended up talking to Brad yesterday. He is a really cool guy. It was awesome to see his unique and pristine land cruiser. it gave me some ideas for mine as well and I certainly was jealous of it. I am hoping to meet up with him and maybe @Shyrock and @theglobb or anybody else haha in Wilmington sometime in late summer. Maybe sooner. Its good to have a land cruiser presence in eastern NC!

Edit:
@svsisu hopefully we can make an Ocracoke or Avon meet up soon!

@theglobb might be out this way towards the end of May. Perhaps then? We could stuff you in the middle of a red troopy sammy.

Speaking of the Red Rocket. I played tour guide for my nephew and some of his friends, but I only managed 7 people and a dog in the Troopy... some people numbers improvement needed on my end to get to globb level troop carrying status. Left the Hammerhead on the beach where we found it.

I finally ran into Rich; he was flogging some of his boards in the front yard and I stopped by.

That date has now changed to whenever we finish swapping a 1JZ into my buddy's first-gen 4runner. Once we have determined that it won't blow up around town we are sending it to the Outerbanks with the red rocket for a killer surf trip/shakedown for it. I'll keep you updatedish on possible dates on when the swap will be finished, need to wire it correctly and see if the transmission grenades itself.🤙

Wheeled hard. Broke s***. Sheared the axle studs, pulled the axle (thank god it's a full float), removed rear driveshaft and drove home in 4H with just the front wheels. Ordered the OE hardware (studs, washers, gaskets, etc) from Cruiser Outfitters and repaired it today. Thanks to @OGBeno for confirming my protocol. Got a little toooo high at camp that night. :bounce2:

I know we have gotten this thread back on topic.....but about being able to use an 'illegal' engine in the States before its 21 years old...

Sure, it may be a bit of a loophole challenge to get an entire running 'illegal' engine here, and for sure not the entire truck, but why not just build one from parts? Other than the cost and complexity?

Then once its here, you can put it in any vehicle in any state/county that doesn't require OBD2 compliance or emissions inspections. Pretty sure this is the process behind the diesel toys conversions.

For the most part here in NC, anything before 1996 is just 'safety' (lighting and tires and wipers, etc) inspections and after 35 years old, no inspections at all. I can run any engine I want in a legally registered truck. Even a 2022 Turbo Diesel V8 from Toyota.
Pretty sure @cruiserdan was commenting on the legality of it; not whether or not you could get the engine into the US. Regardless of how you get it here it isn't legal at the Federal level. And no you can't legally run any engine you want but that doesn't mean you can't get away with it.

Nice! Rich is a cool dude! his boards are pretty sweet too. And yeah the end of may should be a good time! Haha we might need to photoshop mine red. Looks like @theglobb might be bringing a friend with a really nice looking 1st gen 4runner too. Hopefully by then Ill have some more sensible tires and rims mounted too.

I had a 1st gen! Hopefully if you make it to the outer banks I could check this cool build out! that 1st gen looks immaculate!

Cool caving stuff. You don’t carry a spare tire, right?
No. I carry an ADAC+ card (similar to AAA in US) 😁
I have a spare wheel carrier on the back door, but it was installed by the PO and doesn't have the proper support bracket inside the door. So I m not stressing my door. I also don't have a spare tire fitting my tire size. In Germany you are never really remote. In case, I would simply get it towed by ADAC.
Cheers Ralf

So when I talked to you and your buddy and he mentioned the Jz swap I never really got curious or excited about it, because I honestly didn't know anything about the engine. I'm aware of some of the amazing potential of gasoline turbocharged Jap engines built with "motorcycle quality" high rpm capable internals, but am not in tune with the "import scene" where the tech knowledge is common. I finally looked up this engine on wikipedia.........Wow!

I have some cool childhood memories of watching in awe a pair of V8 jeep CJ5s with open exhaust side pipes ripping and drifting the sandy field(used to be a field) across shipyard blvd from greenlawn cemetary(where 17thst intersects.) like 30mph power slides with mountainous rooster tails of dirt kicking 50 feet back from 36"s V8's blaring at 5000rpm.................

I can see that 4 runner being able to duplicate that scene in the future albeit with a higher pitched high rpm growl. I hope you guys can find a "intertidal sand flat" big enough and alone enough to duplicate that scene. Not sure where to find that in NC. You can't legally rip up the "irreplaceable? environmentally critical sand dunes" like it was done in the 70's. We probably caused entire coastal neighborhoods to be destroyed by hurricanes and several species of weeds and insects to become extinct when we rode the honda ATC110 on the dunes at Ft. Fisher back in the day.

.............Hmmwv tires and rims are available in lillington NC from a guy on craigs/ebay for less than $100 each. Some like $75. I bet if you show up as a "poor college kid" and buy a full set you could get a deal. Hmmwv tire pressure is 20-25PSI on the 6000lb M998. I think you could run them at 8 or 10psi with the beadlocks off road on that 4 runner. Spare set of shoes for a beach trip is nice to have. A used worn mud terrain might actually be better on deep sand than a newer MT with more digging tread. I don't think those smaller AT's will be able break that tranny in sufficient spectacular fashion........Tranny is between your right foot and traction either/combination of those can cause or prevent breakaage.

My BJ73 is due for mandatory technical inspection (TÜV). Need to replace the brake discs and pads. And while I'm in it, I'll go for a complete knuckle job 😱.
First time for me... Let's get started.
(I may come back to you guys for some advice... And it may take me several evenings.. )

It will also take you several rolls of paper towels or whatever is used in Germany to clean up goopy grease messes.

Mission aborted, by now.
Got the wheels off and inspected brakes and knuckels. Rotors are still good, even surface, with little wear in thickness and still well within spec. So are the pads.
Knuckels have no play, neither in swiffel bearings nor wheel bearings. Looked worse from outside than it actually is.

Seals on the back at the knuckel balls do not let significant amount of grease go, and grease is not much diluted and by no means dripping yet. Diff oil shows traces of black MoS2 greas, though (I had an issue here over 1.5 years ago, but apparently got that fixed by cleaning the diff breather. No issues since).
No obvious need to digg into this right now 😀. Don't fix what's not broken...

But here are some question:
At what intervals would I need to take it apart for in-depth inspection and maintenance?
The truck is with me for 2 years now / 12000km. No idea what the PO did.
Are there any telltales indicating the bearings or bushes are about to die?
Is periodic re-greasing through the filler hole enough of a maintenance?
I thought I would do the knuckle job once either the seal fails and oil-greas significantly leaks out, or the rotors need replacement, or anything breaks / gives issues. Is that a good plan?
Thanks for advice Ralf

I brazed a 8mm brass stud onto a copper bar to move some accessory wires off the battery clamp bolt. It is still far from ideal with so many wires with inline fuses, but they all lead in the same direction off the battery now.
