Non compliant engines can be imported:

1. Temporarily, under certain circumstances.
2. By an ICI for testing/certification
3. By an OEM for testing/certification

I think that's it.

Edit: I forgot "racing vehicles, as determined by the EPA".

I should have been more specific. It's not possible to legally import them and actually use them.

Great looking MWB cruiser! I would have loved to have seen it in person down there. We were in Moab as well but not part of anything official Jeep Safari. Looks like you went out to Chicken Corners?
Chicken corners, secret spire and buttes & towers. I’ve been a midwest mud guy till moving to New Mexico, so this was my first time on slick rock. I’m hooked, will be putting 33s on so they let me out on the set of trails in 2023.

You should skip EJS in favor of Cruise Moab!

Hello,

Does this mean that a, say, 2014 1VD-equipped truck, is illegal for import in 2039 or 2040?

I am a bit confused.

Didn’t know about it, thanks for the tip. My friend Google just filled me in. I’ll try to get in on it next year. EJS was great, but Cruise Moab sounds even greater!

Waaaay better. And for reference I've been to 23/24 EJS events in last 25 years :D

back at the start of this topic, someone mentioned 21yrs, which is less than the 25yrs rule, so its all good.
21 years for EPA exemption. 25 years for DOT exemption. The engine is the apple. The rest of the vehicle is the orange.

4. "Ancient Engine" produced for 21 years in it's current config.
The 1VD-FTV (the engine itself) can legally be imported under this provision in 2028.
What you put that engine in, is another bag of worms.

That said, when I imported my FTE the customs agent put on the documents it was an electric motor and it cleared customs. I didn't tell them to do this. The FTE is legally importable.

I decided to take the day off since there is no Toyota production today. I went to have lunch and parked next to a new "mustang". First one I have seen of its kind...four doors.

Afterwards, I spent a couple hours giving it a good bath. It was overdue.

I am going to partake in here and say that I am working on a mud members truck for the next couple days. It's a kzj and it's the first time I touch one of these.
Very cool trucks!
Removed manifold to give it a cleaning and replaced the injectors with new OEM ones.

There are few more things needing doing. Mostly upgrades and a couple maintenance items. Next on the list is a locker install and front axle rebuild.

This HZJ77 has needed a tcase rebuild for awhile.

Tcase fluid is blood red, the seal between the tcase and trans as we suspected is wasted. Hard as a rock upon tear down.

Cheers

Honestly, for what you paid and condition of the bottem end, total score on your FTE!

Oh and problem with the 1VD for a swap is diagonistics and complexity. As well as long term maintenance of the engine. We simply do not have the tech here in the USA for this engine. The FTE in my opinion is plenty good too.

Cheers

Seriously, the 1vd is imho a bit underrated. They are stupid reliable just like the FTE and other than the common rail system are actually easy to work on. The 200 series variant is useless in a swap unless you can deal with the immobiliser but in the main I think when you guys are able to start importing them you'll be able to work them out easily.
