What did you do on your 70 series today? (11 Viewers)

Approx one year old.
I bench bled it Saturday (in the truck).
You mean the fluid is just moving from one part of the MC to the other.... no leaking.

New tie rod ends. Cleaned and epoxy coated the relevant articles. OME steering stabilizer. Toe alignment came out good.

Snuck away for a little road trip and car camp last week. Breaking in the 1HZ rebuild and wanted to see how she did fully loaded. Did well except for over the pass. Water temps were higher than I'd like. Pulled over for cool downs a few times. It recovers quick once I'm not pushing it. Think I need to consider a re-gear.

Are you putting new felt dust "shields" over the bearings? I need to look at mine and see if they are encouraging rust beneath.
Hadn't looked at them yet, was focusing on separating the flogged universals. Is rust on the bearing pillows a known issue?

Is it an OEM master cylinder
It is an early 80 series MC and booster.
MC is Aisin I think… maybe Advics.

On mine the felt encouraged rust.
Machinist that pressed the u joints in for me recommended using modern sealed bearings and omitting the felt.

How high did your temps get? I wasn't towing of course but it'd be interesting to compare since I just did same...

I had a bigger roof load but no trailer. Measuring at the radiator, I maxed at 200f except twice temporarily at 210 and a few times at 205. Like yours, it recovered quickly, generally as I went down the other side where it got back to 180 really fast.

Good camping setup!

Pulled over at 210* F and let her cool down so never went beyond that. Being cautious as I have only put about 800 miles on it since the rebuild. Only hit that over the two big passes with about 85* F ambient temps. Otherwise it sticks right around 180-195* F and EGTs consistently max between 800-900* F. Measuring water temps with an Autometer temp sensor in the upper radiator hose. My fairly useless stocker gauge doesn't even move until 208* F or so. Sketchy! I'm running the auto trans and think that makes a big difference.... I'd love a 3rd gear lock out for times like this. Weighing options still.

did you put on new soft lines? I have seen them be the issue, swelling on pressure, or complete collapse.

Brake pedal still slowly sinks under heavy pressure even after major bleeding operations.

I noticed this happening last fall while on some really steep terrain. Fast forward to yesterday and I finally got the Prado running again after sitting for a few months, turns out the fluid slowly leaked out of the reservoir and the pedal now goes straight to the floor with almost no braking at all. No evidence of any external leaks, so I’m wondering if the master cylinder leaked into the booster. I’m planning to rebuild or replace the master cylinder regardless, but if the booster has fluid in it do I need to replace it as well? If so then an 80-series MC and booster might be the best option.

Has anyone checked the noise level in their 70 Series at highway speed?

Sent a long term project home!

@stayalert flew in from VT and picked up truck and ready for a roadtrip.

Enjoy the HZJ74, Rob!
Hello,

Congratulations on the completed project.

Is that your signature? If so, I hope the ink/paint lasts for a long time.

They are about 7 years old I think. I would think OEM lines would hold up that long.

Returned from a nice vacation on Madeira Island. Hikers paradise.

Very steep but overall nice road conditions, so didn't have a 4x4 🫤. But I can tell you: Steep narrow sloops in a 1/2 sixpack Nissan Micra (3 cyl, 0.9L) is also great fun (as long it's a rental and not your clutch and brakes lol).
Overall it's a Landrover domain, but some nice Landcruisers live there, too. Didn't see any J7, though.

And some cool Portuguese UMM Alter II.

For my own BJ73: Glued my rear side window back in today.

Madeira, or to the Royal Navy, The Island.
Looks like a great spot.
