While awaiting a new engine harness for the 80 to arrive, I put some new Toyota shocks, shackles and spring eye bushings on the 40

Just a small project today to hold me over until more parts arrive. Second time doing this, forgot to grease the shaft seal the first time and it didn’t last long. View attachment 2599339
I had a CSM that use to say "do it right, or do it twice."

Replaced the timing belt, water pump, tbelt tensioner, thermostat, tstat housing, serpentine belt, belt tensioner on the tdi jetta.

Realized I had made a mistake in which coolant hoses were leaking. Its one of the ones under the tandem diesel pump. Pump is leaking diesel on the hose slowly, most likely for the two years my sister was driving it and the coolant hose has swelled and is leaking. So now new hose, new tandem fuel pump, new gaskets for all the hose connections there and a frost heater engine preheated.

All those will be installed along with the original hoses I thought were leaking next weekend.

My God it's tight in there though.... the hoses are hard to see let alone reach. After this the only part in the engine bay that hasn't been replaced, to my knowledge, besides the engine will be the alternator.

Hoping to get at least 100k more miles out of it with any other replacements after this.

Oh damn just remembered turbo is original...... must knock on wood lol.

Still love the way a diesel manual trans car drives.

Made a lot of progress this weekend on adding bead locks to Fort Knox, thanks largely to help from @GLTHFJ60 and @SFROMAN .

Step one was to grind the paint off of a set of brand new rims where the inner ring was to be welded onto them.

Next up was to have Johnny burn some wire to glue the inner rings onto the rims. To try and keep the heat from warping the ring or wheels, he stitched it a few inches at a time and then switched to a different rim.

After the rings were all welded in, it was time to bend up the anti-coning tabs and reinforce them with a couple of welds. After Rick and I used the kit’s anti-coning tab tool to bend up all 40 tabs of 1/4” steel, Johnny let Del and I handle most of the welding on the tabs. I was pretty happy with how my welds turned out. Not bad for a noob!!

Once the tabs were all welded, we cleaned up the wheels with flap wheels to remove slag and high spots or sharp edges and then applied primer and paint, which I didn’t get any pics of due to the fact that we were painting by flashlight.

Today, I started the process of mounting the tires back on the wheels. It definitely wasn’t as easy as I had hoped to stuff the outer rim in past one side of the tire’s bead. Lots of prying and cussin’, but it finally popped through.

Unfortunately, the bolt protectors that I ordered with the kit are on back order, so I couldn’t put all the bolts into the outer ring yet, but you get the idea of how they’re gonna look. Gotta say, I’m SUPER happy with how they’re turning out so far!! Can’t wait to get them out on the trail, with the Crawlers at about 4-5 PSI. 😁

One thing I’ll say....these SOB’s are HEAVY!!

Good luck with surgery. Knee surgery is no fun.

Thanks! I am hoping it goes smoothly but apparently i'll be on crutches and minimal movement for 6 weeks and then PT begins. Hoping to be able to lift weights and workout again sometime in the fall.

Honestly, I'm more bummed that I won't be able to race motorcycles this year...my new bike built for this season is just sitting in the garage...

The bolt head protectors finally arrived so that I could finish up the bead locks, so here they are, fully-installed. All 5 tires held full pressure overnight and the two on the sunny side actually gained about 2 psi. Super happy with how they turned out. Big thanks again go out to @GLTHFJ60 , @SFROMAN , and Rick for their help with the welding and painting portion of the install.

Dang that’s a lot of bolts!!!

Let's see them at 4psi. I can't believe how stiff those sidewalls are and always thought they'd "break in". Looks great and a very well added performance upgrade!

Got half of a lift installed on Dusty over the weekend, picked up an old roof rack for Bucky and started cutting it up to make a flat rack.

I'll definitely get some soon. I'm giving them a few days to see if they continue to hold pressure. Maybe I'll air them down this weekend and see if they squat any. These pics are at 30 psi, but I can tell ya that at 12 psi they don't look much different than this. Hopefully 8 fewer psi makes a big difference. They still have gotten great traction. I just feel like they'll really shine when I can get more contact patch out of them.

Fixed it.
Nice. You should have done the front half lift install first so you could ride around with the Carolina Squat for a while :hillbilly:

On old Toyotas, that's just weak, old worn out leaf springs, not intentional at all. LOLOL

Leaf spring Yotas do the squat from side to side instead of front to back!

Speaking of TOYOTA springs. Does anyone have any stock pre-1980 FJ40 springs laying around?

I have the cruiser lean with the dealer installed shims on the high side so thinking I might need a less loved spring(s) on the driver side.
