I've been watching those Aussies on 4WD 24/7 and fell in love with the UTE. Thought about chopping my other 80 (Deacon) and adding a tray and canopy, but MUD members (@GLTHFJ60 @Jeff Elliott @roflbox and @brettk) talked some since into me. So I started looking for an 80 on the platform I hate the most. . Facebook.

Found this in VA.

Called @kutza for his thoughts on the LC (he previously took a look at it), and he offered to hold on to it until I arranged transportation from VA to NC. . .Thanks again 🙏🏽

Then because the stars are starting to align, one of the ONSC members sold me his ARB bumper and winch for a Hell of a deal.

So this is going to be OUR (MUD members) build. Things like chopping the 80 and hopefully the tray and canopy system will be done professionally. But getting the LC to me, things I buy, recommendations, will be with the help from you all.

I'll be seeing @cruisermatt at GSMTR we already have a romantic date setup to discuss a LS swap. Also communication with @thatcabledude on the same topic.

The LC got dropped off at @kutza's house today and he took a few more pics for me. I thought I'd fly to VA and drive back to NC. . ~6 hours, but he advised me to tow instead.

Breaks have to be pumped and go to the floor to stop. Power steering leak. Exhaust leak at downpipe to cat. No dash lights. And I asked him to check to lockers. He said the light flash (I think he just turned the switch and didn't actually more to see if they engaged 🤷🏽‍♂️)

Some surface rust as seen and expected but I think a wire brush and some paint will make it alright 👌🏽

Also looks like the valve cover is leaking. Probably so much more.

I think this "Soup kitchen" LC was a "F-Shack for Dirty Mike and the boys". . Your welcome 🖕🏽

What about using a crew cab first gen Tundra instead? Already has the cab, nice interior, and a v8. Solid front axle swap would be easy
Because I already bought the 80 and really like the way this one looks.

You are going to build the box as well, or flat bed it?
Can you import cab storage like that into the US from Australia?
The plan is to get both tray (flat bed) and canopy (storage cab). A few shops in the US sell the Australian systems. I've been in contact with the shop in Oregon and here in Asheville NC. They are hella expensive though.

Yeah I've seen similar pics. They look cool. But setting that aside as I assume you plan to use it speaking strictly on practicality and capability I think you can easily loose both if not well thought out. That's a small tray. Then look at the design of the tray. All the weight for cargo is really high which hurts center of gravity-a lot. A stock bodied 80 will out wheel that thing easily. Then look at the size of the cab. What if you want to pull over, lean the seat back, and sleep for a couple hours? No room for that either.

@White Stripe I hear you loud and clear. The trey and canopy are made of alloy, so that'll cut down on weight. I'm not too worried about about the sleep thing and laying back, my other 80 has a "sleep system".

In a few years I'll be retiring and moving to Okinawa Japan. Planning to take my LCs with me. I already know what your going to say. . "Just buy an 80 there". I'm sure I will eventually, but I want mine because they will be done the way I want them. And if for some reason I can't bring them, someone will buy my sweet ass 80s 😉.

Look into how much it’ll cost you to register your US spec 80 in Japan. Years ago it nearly cost my friend (both Navy) 5k to register his Subaru there.

A year or so I did. It was roughly $10k. I also asked them about 60 and 80 series there. They were saying ~$30k (because they want to make money by sending them here to the US).

$10k is to ship it there and register.
