Off to the exhaust shop. Ill finish the intake to turbo, Wideband/boost controller and catch can when it gets back. Hopefully done by the end of next week. Im afraid I won't be able to use the stock airbox. I do have snorkel so I want something that works. Thinking about this one. Amazon product ASIN B0035GS6RU

Have used that filter canister on LS swapped K5 with snorkel before. Worked well.

Overall Im happy. I didn't want to piece a kit together and have huge down time. I just can't work on my stuff anymore. Im way too busy. I was only willing to get something that was ready to go. For the most part the cold side met my expectations 100%. The hot side seemed well made. I knew the runners weren't equal and I expected some fitment issues but had none. The waste gate is a cheap knock off but I think it will work for 10 psi ok. I changed the spring to a 3.5# so I can control the rest with the boost controller.

The more I think about the turbo weight hanging on the manifold and the way these trucks jump around and get jarred I wonder if some support brackets may save the manifold long term.

We have a ton of room to work with compared to other vehicles Ive had.

I still feel the cooler won't get damaged but again I'm not going to stuff that rig where its going to get banged up. I made some changes with silicone that I felt made the kit fit better and work for my turbo. I also did not use their oil feed line/kit. It is way to easy to buy a T to run off the oil pressure gauge spot. The drain was good. My shop guy did it pretty easy. I thought dropping the pan and drilling was a pain but it wasn't.

My turbo is not letting the original cleaner fit so I have some unexpected fabbing. Hopefully the enclosed cleaner will work with some minor work. Ill come back and install the innovate SCG-1 and test. Im really hoping I have a week left. IT was totally stock truck in February

I di but just eye balling it I thought that id be moving and cutting to make it work and there was no kit that I saw that was plug and play.

I coudnt have done that
 
Usually you run the same size as the output on the turbo. There are very specific formulas for heat transfer and speed of the air through the intercooler. You don't want the air to travel faster than 0.4 mach or it is traveling too fast to actually cool. So 2.5" pipe you're good for 500cfm, and 3" you are good for about 1200cfm. Converting cfm to lbs/min, you roughly divide by 14.27. So 500cfm is 35lbs/min, about 350hp at the crank more than that and you could go up in intercooler tube size.

IC question - I have seen these motors running both 2.5" and 3" in/out on the IC is there a rule of thumb for proper sizing or will both work running low boost?

I think most 1FZ setups that are running well and are near 10psi are hitting 350HP at the crank just an FYI there. Even with a low .80 VE, 10 PSI on a 274 CU IN at 5K RPM yields over 350HP.

The air exits the Precision PTE turbos at 2". Ive run several turbo cars over 600 RWHP(Typhoon, Turbo Buicks, and BMW 335s all high boost) that never ran bigger than 2.5" pipes in and out of the IC. My current 335XI layed down 600AWHP with 2.5" pipes through an ATM front mount. That's a 3.0L @ 24 PSI and a PTE6466.

This Kit is 2.5" and at the end where it goes in the MAF expands to 3".

All that to say 2.5" is more than we'll need without having an exotic super high boost build from my actual experience.

Because you are doing it doesn't mean it is right. The speed the air goes through the intercooler determines how quickly you can shed the IAT heat. So your 335xi would have better IAT's with larger intercooler piping.

I am actually interested in seeing how this turns out. I was just on their site and seen they have 2 turbo options T70 and the T76 option. Price wise they are not too bad 1639 for the T70 and the T76 for 1739 both with intercooler.

My concern would be gearing. I plan on upgrading the 3rd/pumpkins to 4.88. Would this be too much for the LC after being turbocharged?
 
Yeah no need using decent parts. I bet you could get a chinese 4.88 3rd too should be pretty cheap. Maybe good for a few months.

I guess my cheap $200 ebay turbo would make you cringe. Ive been running 10-12 psi on stock ecu with wrx injectors. No tuning sucks. It will be perfect at wot but leans out at 15psi. Just wish i had the ability to tune it. Im beating on my motor to see what it will take. Its got 325k miles and seems to take the boost like a champ. I did freshen up the motor and go with arp head studs. I waiting to blow it up so i can vortec swap it and go bigger turbo and hp tuners.

Anyway you would be way better off buying a borgwarner turbo and building a cheap manifold and make your own kit. Or if your budget allows go for the witsend kit. I can tell you i have less than 1500 into my turbo setup and that jncludes pulling tho motor and replacing every gasket with oem gaskets.
 
Yeah still don't know anyone running 10psi on stock setup. WRX injectors are 440 or 550cc usually, compared to stock 305cc Land Cruiser injectors.

The motor is plenty stout like I said earlier, what can be done and doing it right aren't always the same thing. The rods are over 2lbs a piece they will take a lot of abuse. But certainly not the right way to do it and I would never tell anyone to do it that way knowing it is just a matter of time.

Yep for sure the BW turbo's are really great for their price point and with the new CNC wheels are packing a lot of tech and performance. That is why I picked it for the kit. And yeah if someone has the ability to make their own manifold I would definitely go that way over CX as well. Not to mention I would use stock quality wastegates, hoses, lines, fittings, etc. But I guess if you don't really care about quality/longevity and the 80 is just something to play with like an 90's honda, the CX kit is built for exactly that customer and it is kind of how they got started.

If i were to start over id pick that borgwarner turbo and still build my own manifold. It all depends on how risky you wanna get. :)
 
Stock to me is my setup, exhaust, fuel pump change, plugs, and shift kit. If I can't hit 10 psi safely ill be surprised. Anywhere close to that will be enough and will be where I stop. Im just trying to get the pig to move swiftly. I don't see it being fast and would never spend the money to make it fast.
