this thread is depressing - I was hoping it would die after about 4 posts

My thoughts exactly. If I didn't need to sell my 96 I would keep it as a parts bin for the 97.

I'm always looking for a rig I can buy for parts but.... The parts are 20 years old might as well fix the part you have which in most cases you can do that on an 80.

FJ80 Front axle housing is discontinued; Rear axle housing is still available.

Are these part numbers still available?

Beno,

And I was going too send you an email about this topic. I'm looking at buying a Cruiser and my concerns were finding stuff for the 80 series. Looks like my hunch of biting the bullet and spending the extra cash too buy a 100 series is the thing too do.

I don't think I would not buy an 80 because of this thread.

In fact, I would buy one because of this thread.

Get in early.

:)

There are still thousands of parts available for the 80 many of them being the most important things--engine, transmission, xfer and chassis.

Agreed. People still buy 40's and they're way older. The aftermarket will fill any major needs that arise, and forums like this will fill the minor ones. Threads like this will be a good guide as to what those needs are. I also think 3D printing will open up a huge new range of replacement possibilities.

Other gone stuff off the cuff

Fenders, all years, both sides.
Dash pads, 91-94.
Anything to do with cloth upholstery.
Headliners.
40th/Collector body side moundings.
3FE throttle body, air pump, distributor, fuel injectors.

So question,

I was told a lot of this stuff ends up back in Japan after it is discontinued. So is it possible to get this stuff out of Japan still? Are part numbers different or the same. I mean I would be willing to eat high shipping cost to get the parts I want/need.

It gets discontinued when it is all gone. I have not heard of stuff being returned to Japan.

bummer if dash pads are NLA, I was just looking at one for my 91 a month ago. While searching I found a bunch of other interior parts NLA. I don't recall it all now but some was sunroof parts a few dash pieces and some other interior trim. I think the early wiper motor was also NLA.

:(

Try contacting japan-based 'deputy' services like kuboten.com.

Currently they fetch and ship items off of yahoo japan auctions (ebay is dead to japan) and stuff like jdm audio gear. Their rates are fair.

No reason they couldn't send akira-kun down to the parts counter.

Went for a burrito at KB's in Hailey yesterday, and saw 4 of them in the pkng lot (besides mine)...3 TLC's and an LX. As common here, as a VW in LA. Soon they'll be coming up for sale cheap, for parts.

That must be at the Smokey Mtn. location. I live in Idaho, Pocatello, and I've seen exactly two of them in two months.

I gotta say this thread scares me. I've been saving my pennies to buy an FZJ this summer, but if it is gonna cost me $50 for a couple of plastic gears for the seat, and goodness knows how much for whatever other part that is disco'd, maybe I'd better start looking at Heeps or 4Runners again. :o

1.) Are the black pearl "full time 4wd" emblems (low left on lower gate) gone? I seem to recall the upper liftgate "Toyota LANDCRUISER" in black pearl was going, going, near gone.

2.) Is the supercharger kit still being produced in small batches, or has that boat sailed too?

The pearl emblems, with the exception of the "TOYOTA LAND CRUISER" garnish are gone.

At the moment there are 12 supercharger kits in deopt stock. Since the supercharger now costs more than some people are paying for complete trucks I find it difficult to believe the future is bright for them.

Toyota should heavily discount them to stop incurring inventory carrying fees and needing to have some overworked gray bearded walking parts catalog have to count them at least once a year! :whoops:

Bump:

Center shifter console is gone (the plastic structure that goes around the tranny/xfer shifters). Both in tan and gray.
