My Piggie made it to GSMTR. I didn't get to drive any trails as they are temporarily closed but I did get a 7 hour road trip along with some local roads. She ran pretty well but I did encounter a few problems.
1 - intermittent idle - she doen't want to settle down to the same spot every time. dbenke helped me straighten out (literally) my choke cable which helped but she still wants to idle low at start-up (550) and then high after some driving (1000). Then at other times she will settle down right nice to 700...
2 - Pig wants to sometimes stall after I've been driving at speed (55 mph) for awhile and depress the clutch and start gearing down. She will just die. The brakes don't work too well then!
3 - gas tank is not venting properly. Every time I pull the cap I hear pressure in the tank venting. If the tank is full and sitting in the sun she will try to puke gas out the fill neck.
4 - She doesn't like to start after one of the stalls from #2. I popped the hood after one of these and the fuel bowl was pretty much empty.
I checked the tank for venting awhile back and didn't find any problems. I'm going to go through it again. I think 1, 2 and 4 might be linked to 3.
Unfortunately for the next few days my Pig is my DD. My FJC is in Atlanta and I have to go pick her up soon!

I agree #3 is probably the problem. I had the puking on a hot day problem once or twice myself. One time I got sprayed in the face with gas when I opened it at a gas station.
Not sure what to do - maybe get a venting gas tank cap?
Thanks Yoop.
Yup - k9 and I had some similar stuff going on. Its also getting hotter w/ more sun which will exacerbate venting issues from what I've seen.
I'm going to tear into this tonight (hopefully).
- check venting from engine bay into exhaust hole under driver's floor in body mount (seemed OK this weekend)
- check venting from engine bay back into tank (seemed OK this weekend)
- check fuel pump weep holes for fuel, I've noticed some 'wetness' on top of the 76 pump which might tell me it is going bad
- replace all rubber fuel lines
- check check valve in rear driver's quarter - I did this awhile back and it seemed OK - they are pricey to replace from Toyota
- check fuel vapor separator - gotta figure out how to do that
- when all that is done I'll put a new fuel filter on
All that is pretty cheap except the fuel pump. I'm pricing those now. ($ is tight)
Next will be to drain and drop the tank. I've had several people say "what the heck happened to your tank?" Seems it is a weeee bit dented - like from the inside out! That could cause the coating to crack and dislodge. I'll check the inside of the tank and will probably buy a used tank to have boiled and coated. If I do that then pretty much my entire fuel system will be new or serviced.

You need to replace that tank. It's junk and unsafe. Really unsafe.
Interesting discussion. While at GSMTR with Steve and his pig, mine started to behave badly as well. After a carb cleaning and change of fuel filter, I am beginning think that this little piggy has a venting issue as well. I really noticed it this trip, what with it being like a zillion degrees outside. Stopping for gas and I got a hand full of gas when I unscrewed the cap. Hmmmm....
Remove & discard the check valve. It is not helping the situation any. Just let the tank breathe directly through the charcoal canister.

10-4
I thought about replacing it - but it was pretty expensive IIRC - around $40 or more from Toyota.
I don't have a charcoal canister installed - just the fuel/vapor separator thingy (black plastic w/ 4 connected vertical tubes).
I do have a spare charcoal canister from a FJ60 (larger than the 55 canister) that I could install and have thought about. Due to its size it would be a tight fit in the engine compartment. I thought about putting it in the driver's rear quarter but haven't test fit it yet but I think it would be too large.
X2 it's not needed. Your desmogged anyway. Most likely the check valve is allowing air intot he system when it's cold but no air out when it's hot. So it just keeps filling up like a balloon.
Skip the charcoal canister. That's just one more peice of crap you have to worry about now. I'd only install one back after you know you have your other problems solved. And even then I probably wouldn't do it.
