I really want to lower my on road RPMs when I’m tooling along at 80 in this oddBall. The cheapest way to do that is to add mo tire. View attachment 2670339

The 285/75-16 Yokos are a perfect 33” x 11 tire and the 285/75-17’s are just taller but the same with with just a tiny bit more weight.
I love the ride of the truck with the OME stock replacement coils but I’ve been wanting to level out the truck and with the bigger tires I have the excuse. 1” Dobinsons coil

Took the wheels to Powder Keg and had them color matched to my sliders and other items I’ve had that color (steps, pintle)

Finally, the wheels they came on the truck were splits that look almost exactly like these FJ Cruiser rims

So you upgraded to the 17” FJ Cruiser steelies? What width are those?

Yes. They are nice and tight on the axle. They have little fingers on the bore that make them snug on the hub nicely all the way around. One problem with the Smooth Vintique wheels that I ordered is they had M14 bore holes v M12 that the Toyota studs are. I started off using normal acorn lugs and they did not have enough taper to get the wheels centered as good as you need on an 80. These trucks as so sensitive to any wheel:tire vibration

Also. Weight. The 17” wheel combo is only 4# heavier per corner at 94#.

That stock split and 750-16 is 70# by comparison and the 16” setup was 90#

the 100 series M14 OEM studs work well and are fairly easy to make work. May consider if doing axle or brake maintenance any time soon.

Took the OddBall out with my the new tires to see what kind it RPM reduction I got

Here is the before with the 33s at 3000 r

This is after with the 34s. Not quite what I was hoping for but it’s some. Basically my 78 mph interstate has it at 2800 v 3000 now. That’s something I guess.

Just an FYI, at 80mph with 315s and 4.10s, I am at 2500rpms.

Cheers
Turd 80s love the Interstate.

That’s about where the Warthog is now with 315s, H55 and 4.11s.

I love 315s on 80s with flares but these fit just right for a flare less fella

Wish it was less of a pain in the ass to de-flare. Much prefer the look as well.

Saw you running around last week when I went to see an old friend from school.

It’s an unmistakable truck!

Love it.

Makes sense. Yours is surely an auto. Manuals cruise at much higher RPMs.

It would've been interesting to see how something like Fifteen52's Analog HD wheels would've looked. IT has that Vintage Steelie look but super light.

Auto vs manual really doesn’t matter, it is all about the ratio.

Yes the 343 has a better OD.

His options to have a better top end speed are run bigger tires and or change the diff gears. Or simply drive it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Cheers

It’s fine. Has a great powerband with the Desmog 3FE and the 9:1 woo pow Mosley head. Everyone that drives it is shocked at the power it has. RPMs was a good excuse to get a bigger tire :D

Love the OEM look of the grey steel wheels!

(Yes, that is some cigar ash I dropped on it this afternoon. Some idiot put the analog computer from an automatic transmission on top of it and it leaked ATF all over it.)

These are OEM steel wheels off of a contemporary 79 series that a friend of mine in Canada is putting on his 2000 Troopy. Now that I see a similar wheel on your 80 I see what he sees in it!

change the odometer gearing, i did that on both (have 35")
I had exactly same color '91 FZJ-80 GX as well however mine had 1fzf(carbed), that was sadly stolen from me in 2013(the manual tranny does it justice.)
then after years of no cruiser i finally scored one that needed some TLC, '92 vx manual tranny(carbed) ambulance doors(love them)

Unreal weekend in the Ozarks. We covered 250 miles off-highway from Thursday to Sunday. The Oddball literally owns the woods and rocks
