Check out the gear that plugs into the transmition. That might be your odometer problem. Could be an easy fix.
Probably not that gear if his speedometer still works.

The odometer problem was that over time and heat the oil drained out of the original factory grease at the number tumblers, leave a stiff hardening paste. Causing the helical gear at the 9-10th of a mile tumbler to jump the gear and start chipping a tooth at that point. The oil was still viscous and puddled in the bottom of the speedo case. Tooth was not completely destroyed but getting smaller.

Dosed the tumblers with PB Blast which loosened up the paste. Odometer working. Not known for how long. Found a NOS identical to mine on the spider web. Will check its grease consistency before installing.

Might wait to replace till it stops, as I like original parts, that’s why I haven’t had a shoulder replacement.

If you take those tumblers apart and clean them, they will work just fine without any lubricant whatsoever. I have personal experience with that phenomenon in my '83 Troopy. They are easy to take apart, FWIW.
