Hello!
I am driving across the country toward LA and am crashing in a hotel near Denver tonight. My cruiser has been running great but earlier today I noticed a tin-ey rattle. I took a video and sent it to my usual mechanic and he is worried it could be the smog pump, which could damage the water pump if it seizes. Tomorrow was our day into the mountains. Now I’m worried we may have to leave her with a cruiser specialist in Denver until someone can get to it. Bad timing with New Years Eve tomorrow and having to be back to work Monday. We (my lady, dog, and I) may have to rent a car for the coolest part of the trip unless there are any DIY tricks. SO BUMMED!!

Bump to the top for you. Someone out there should be able to help, I’d overnight you a good pump but of all the irony I’m in Breckenridge on vacation.
If you can find a good shop they may be able to simply de vane that pump and you could run it as a pully as long as the bearing is good.
The other option is finding a parts store pump to get you home. Although they don’t get the best love here on mud.

That IS ironic! We are staying in Glenwood Springs tomorrow night. Hopefully via my LC and not Enterprise. But not looking good.. I found several recommended shops in the area but no one is open NYE. Little nervous to do any work myself and pray it gets us through those mountains unless it’s a sure thing and a stupid-proof replacement.

Check with rising sun 4x4 club forum online. They are a toyota club and have some guys that might help. I have a relative that owns a cruiser shop near denver but he doesn't reopen until the 4th.

First- Ockham's razor thinking. Isolate the problem / symptoms. Verify that it is the smog pump by listening stethoscope style under the hood (long screwdriver on body of pump, or alternator or water pump, note the differences, be carefull of the moving parts) Hmm.
There is a workaround where you omit the belt that drives the pump with a smaller one to keep the waterpump going. I recall a mention of using pantyhose to go from crank pulley to waterpump pulley. . . Creative solution, with a braid type overlay knot of the pantyhose.

The air (smog) pump is not vital for the engine, it will run, performance may suffer. I had this happen over ten years ago, and got a replacement pretty quickly from a local NAPA and replaced it in my friends driveway. It was a pita to get it out and re-installed, try calling around in Denver for a store that may have one in stock? Or get a shorter belt to keep the water pump going.
There are quite a few cruiser shops in Denver, maybe reach out via clubhouse?

Parts - Yota Yard - http://yotayard.com/parts/ Call these guys in the morning! they're not the cheapest but they've had almost everything I've needed last minute.

They're located In Denver. I don't know of any shops up there that do old Cruisers up there, but I'd ask them too- they may have a better Idea. If you get into the springs, Redline landcruisers do pretty good for this kinda stuff. Good luck! tomorrows my only day off and I'm in the springs, Pm if you think I can help.

I was on a trip to the San Juan Mountains and while there had my air pump seize. There is a fairly easy work around if you’re willing to finish your trip without P/Steering. The water pump has a two groove pulley. Remove the belt that goes around the crank, air pump, and water pump. Remove the belt that goes around the crank, alternator, and the P/S pump. Install a NAPA 25-22495 belt around the crank, alternator, and the water pump. If you can’t get that belt, a auto parts store should be able to cross reference it to a Gates or something else. I drove my 40 back to Denver like this, no problems.

^^^this looks like a good idea. I'd get the belt but just carry it with me and when and if the pump seizes ...pull over, take off the belts and but the new one on. You'll know if it seizes...the belt will squeal, maybe even get thrown off. Then when you get home source a new pump or even better a reliable smog pump delete pulley.

Thanks! I’m new the 60 world. How difficult and time consuming is it to switch from the longer belt to the short belt I would buy? Is it something I could do in the snow?

Its not hard to swap the belts, just takes some fidgeting and basic tools to get them around the fan. Loosen the tensioners then slide both belts off in front of the fan, spin it by hand to help get them on/off. Route the new belt around the Crank, the alternator, and the water pump then tighten using the alternator tensioner. you won't have power steering but it'll be okay for a bit.

If you can't get a new pump installed, having the spare belt like fjc-man said is the best option.

My smog pumps long gone and my power steering's the same way, I've run this for a bit now and as long as you anticipate your low speed turns its not bad.

If it were me, I would confirm its the smog pump by taking the belt off and starting it momentarily to see if the sound stops. Also you'll be able to spin the smog pump by hand to feel if its smooth or not.

I would definitely reach out to rising sun. Someone will have a spare and or be willing to help.

I can post up on their forum if you want. I used to be a member but moved to the flatlands.

Edit: I just posted for you on RS. Hopefully you'll get some help. PM your number And I can post that for you as well.

Thanks for posting this in RS, Martin. just saw it and for the OP, if I had a good pump, I'd bring it to you. I'm confident there'll be some action in RS.

FWIW. I had a smog pump seize in NM (hey, wait, MDH33, were you there??) if you can deal with manual steering, it is very easy to swap the belts so you are running the Alt and waterpump, eliminating the smog and PS. follow the pulleys and you'll see the alignment. and I used existing belt on motor.
when mine went, it squealed intermittently then just basically seized and stopped the motor from running. swapped belts and moving again.

Hi Shawn! I missed that NM trip I think.

I were still in CO I would help. I always carry spare belts, pump and a jim c pulley in my 60.

Oreilley sells smog pumps, fwiw. Boulder location had one in stock a few years ago when I needed one.

You can get a reman A1 Cardone at most parts houses, then take to any mechanic for replacement. It's straightforward.

Impossible to tell (for me) from the vid where the noise is coming from.

Yep please pm me. A couple of us RS guys have a "community garage" where we help other cruiserheads possibly we can help you or out you in touch with the right person.

It’s all good. I had Nick come over this morning and we worked on it in my garage. Took the P/S belt off, noise was still present. Took the air pump belt off, spun the pulley and the bearings were noisy. Installed the previously mentioned size belt, all nice and quiet minus P/S assist. Nick will be a more muscular guy by the time he gets back to California.
