Its running well enough, but I don't trust my quick repair job on the crankshaft keyway that let loose last summer; I don't particularly want to get stranded again.. Plans are in the works for a different engine later this year.
So I could bring my 60, but I don't particularly trust it.
 
So I can’t decide which cruiser to take. The 40 is ready to roll and the tent is currently on it however, it has no ac. I’m thinking the two day drive from Alabama to at least Amarillo will suck. As well as the drive back. The 60 would be less fun on the trails but much more comfortable on the drive with air conditioning but, to drive it I need to install a lift kit, replace the tie rod ends, and move the roof top tent over to it. I have a new set of locked axles to go under it as well but that will take even more time bleeding brakes, removing driveshafts, running cables, etc and no current access to a lift. Now the kicker is I’m not even going to be home to start on it until the 30th and with a planned departure time of Friday at lunch I’ll be in a time crunch. My guesstimate is I’ll have two to three evening at best to work on it.
 
Sounds to me as if your up against a wall. Seems like you 'almost' have no choice, gotta take the 40. Too much work to do on your 60 in too short of a time frame.

Roma, carry that new lift in the back of your 60. We can all pile on it at Casey’s and to the worlds quickest suspension job :).
 
That would be cool Jimmy. The last one went quick with two sets of hands.

That reminds me of the time I had a red '83 FJ60 to part out on the side street by my house, the same spot as the photo of my '86 I posted earlier. Two friends drove up from Santa Fe to help. All three of us each had our own tools and were long time Land Cruiser owners, and we got down to business. An hour and a half after we started the engine was pulled and loaded in the back of one of my friend's truck, and that included a 15 to 20 minute lunch break for pizza. And we didn't even cut wires, pipes, or hoses - everything was neatly disconnected. I'd say go for it!
 
Seems like a lot of people are doing their last minute mods and fixes. Me too. I changed oil and fuel filter last night and had to drive it back home half way to work this morning because it was stalling. Im guessing I still have air in the lines. I did tighten the primer pump last night and I'm hoping I didn't break it in the process. Overnighted a new one (Thanks Amazon) just in case. I will swap a new fuel filter on as well and hope for the best.
Good news is I got it inspected this morning before my return trip home.

I'll need to check everything when I get back home. The only things I touched were filter, bleeder screw, and primer pump. Now I could have whacked a hose loose. I do have extra fuel line in case it is cracked. I replaced all the lines from the tank to hard line but haven't changed from IP to hard line yet.
 
I just finished wrenching on mine, well as much as you're ever really finished. A few things did get pushed until after this trip though.

Got the top Monday afternoon and installed it yesterday. Took her for a shake down run and everything is working great and the new AC keeps it cool in the Texas heat.

We're heading for the mountains tomorrow and then over to SAS the following week. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Yessir, it's the little things that need attention on both of mine. Another few days and fluid changes before both of mine are ready to roll out.

I think I’m in the clear. Replaced the last 1’ of old fuel line and now everything seems good. It was pretty squishy and expanded on the IP end. It was easy to turn by hand so it was time to replace.

Brandon at Classic Cruisers in Poncha Springs might be able to help you out. He is not far out of the way, has a bunch of 60's in the yard, and is a good guy to deal with.

One of the latest additions to his collection of FJ60s is the body shell from my '85 FJ60 parts vehicle, which I delivered to him in April. Worked out a fair swap for some FJ40 parts I needed for my '71. He is good to deal with.

But I already have a skid plate coming from another MUD member near Colorado Springs, should be on the UPS truck heading south later this evening. I'll have it Friday, then I'll clean it, paint it, and install it over the weekend.

Tomorrow I'll cut the excess off of my U-bolts and remove the bulky, welded on receiver hitch that interferes with my spare tire underneath. So by the end of the weekend the FJ60 will be ready for SAS #2 :-).
 
I hope to get the rest of my list taken care of this weekend..
  1. Balance front tires
  2. Front brake pads
  3. Front brake hoses
  4. Setup and install rear 4.88s
  5. Oil change, filters, plugs, wires,cap and rotor
  6. Install new trans cooler with fan
  7. Engine and trans temp monitors
  8. Install new fan clutch
  9. Flush and fill PS
  10. Flush and fill trans
  11. Drain and refill rearend one more time (oil was pretty dirty at the 500 mile oil change on new gears I installed the weekend before last - I'm at 1000+ now so one more ought to do it)
  12. Install new TC input gear
  13. Finish setup on front 4.88s and install
  14. Check charge on AC
  15. Pack!
9 days till we hit the road!
