Wow, so much bad wow in here!I didn't want to clog up the PP21 thread with my return trip drama. When leaving the party, Mike one of our hosts suggested we drive Hwy. 44 across the state instead of the 90. What a fantastic drive, nobody at all on the road for the whole trip, except maybe a dozen vehicles and one huge tractor trailer who took out my windshield. It had to finally happen, but man it almost came through the glass right in my face, scarey.
That was the start of the drive home from hell. Right after breaking the glass the wagon totally went dead. all electrics went silent for a split second and fired right back up. That kind of thing will get to you when you're on a road with nothing around. About that time I started to hear the brakes rubbing when hitting the pedal, it got worse as the day went on and then another electric stall, we kept driving. Late in the day we found a small town with a hotel and auto parts store, stopped to regroup.
Next morning it was raining as I took apart the rear brakes to find no pads on the piston side of both rear brakes, rotors shot, worst I've ever had on any of my vehicles. The auto parts had the pads for my 07 4runner calipers, but that's it, no rotors or calipers. So, pads, jack stands, piston depressor and tarp in hand and in the rain I replaced what I could and headed for home.
The rain kept it up all day, but making it to Iowa the rain got harder and so the wagon decided to shut off twice more at highway speeds. It falls flat then immediately fires up, nerve racking. By the time we roll over the Mo. border the rain made it hard to see even with the wipers on high, so it's a good time for the driver's side wiper to slip on the gear and make seeing impossible. I played with it in the rain getting soaked for the second time in the day, but only managed to wipe half the view. Running for home the rain let up, wagon ran smooth and the brakes worked.
We made it home, pet the dog, checked the goats and drank three very quick beers on the porch.
When's the next Pig Party!![]()
What happened to your windshield? Did the semi throw a rock and break it? Or was it the wind surge from the semi passing that broke the windshield? How badly is it broken?
The electrical sounds crazy! It almost sounds like the ignition switch is failing. Do you have a big, heavy keychain weighing on it?
Rear brakes - ugh! You are running hydroboost, correct? Adjustable proportioning valve?
Glad you made it home in the rain w/ only one windshield wiper - Jinkees!
