I didn't want to clog up the PP21 thread with my return trip drama. When leaving the party, Mike one of our hosts suggested we drive Hwy. 44 across the state instead of the 90. What a fantastic drive, nobody at all on the road for the whole trip, except maybe a dozen vehicles and one huge tractor trailer who took out my windshield. It had to finally happen, but man it almost came through the glass right in my face, scarey.

That was the start of the drive home from hell. Right after breaking the glass the wagon totally went dead. all electrics went silent for a split second and fired right back up. That kind of thing will get to you when you're on a road with nothing around. About that time I started to hear the brakes rubbing when hitting the pedal, it got worse as the day went on and then another electric stall, we kept driving. Late in the day we found a small town with a hotel and auto parts store, stopped to regroup.

Next morning it was raining as I took apart the rear brakes to find no pads on the piston side of both rear brakes, rotors shot, worst I've ever had on any of my vehicles. The auto parts had the pads for my 07 4runner calipers, but that's it, no rotors or calipers. So, pads, jack stands, piston depressor and tarp in hand and in the rain I replaced what I could and headed for home.

The rain kept it up all day, but making it to Iowa the rain got harder and so the wagon decided to shut off twice more at highway speeds. It falls flat then immediately fires up, nerve racking. By the time we roll over the Mo. border the rain made it hard to see even with the wipers on high, so it's a good time for the driver's side wiper to slip on the gear and make seeing impossible. I played with it in the rain getting soaked for the second time in the day, but only managed to wipe half the view. Running for home the rain let up, wagon ran smooth and the brakes worked.

We made it home, pet the dog, checked the goats and drank three very quick beers on the porch.

When's the next Pig Party!
Wow, so much bad wow in here!

What happened to your windshield? Did the semi throw a rock and break it? Or was it the wind surge from the semi passing that broke the windshield? How badly is it broken?

The electrical sounds crazy! It almost sounds like the ignition switch is failing. Do you have a big, heavy keychain weighing on it?

Rear brakes - ugh! You are running hydroboost, correct? Adjustable proportioning valve?

Glad you made it home in the rain w/ only one windshield wiper - Jinkees!

A whole lot of wow is right. We never seen what hit us, but it left a smashed spot @ 6" dia. I'm just glad it didn't come through. On the electrical, everything goes dead for a split second then back on, so who knows. I had a cam sensor on a truck go bad, but it would shut down then overnight start again until hot. It could be so many things. :meh: I'll try checking a few things then hand off to the pros.

I want to order some brake parts and posted in the 4runner forum about what's best, but got crickets. So, anybody have a favorite brand of rotors, pads and calipers. Rear brakes are 2007 4runner. Thought I'd go with some slotted and drilled rotors this time, any ideas?

Thanks guys! Power stop keep coming up with my searching.

Hey Bob, Wilwood have some good calipers, but I don't think they'll fit my 16" wheels. I have to call them.

Still curious as to why they drug so much on the one side. Something wrong with the caliper, or some kind of residual pressure issue🤔

Single piston sliding (I think), so more a hardware / slider issue than piston I’d guess?

Yeah, I'm not sure, the piston side pad was worn down on each caliper. I collapsed the piston very easy with the tool, so they aren't frozen. I wish I had checked them before I converted over to the hydroboost. Only thing I can do is replace everything and start over. There is no residual valve and the proportioning valve was adjusted conservatively ( I think ).

Speaking of hydroboost. Before the pad issue did you notice better stopping?

Yes I did, then into the trip it was getting a hard pedal and metal on metal noise, but still stopping faster. After I replaced the bad pads, she was grabbing just fine again. I'm really thinking I had a problem before the hydroboost and when it's all new I'll be able to feel how much better.

your issue with the truck shutting off sounds like a bad connection at one of the main grounds or positive leads. My FJ62 used to do that when all the cables were original. Hit a bump on the freeway and the whole thing would go dead for a slip second. Go over all your connections!

Yeah, that's a good place to start. I'll go over all the connections including the ignition switch that I did have apart before the trip. I haven't checked for any thrown codes yet either.

I went with EDC rotors and pads. As far as what happened, the only thing I found were the pistons hitting the backing plate. I have a Diamond rear axle that was made to use '07 4 Runner brakes. It seems the custom made backing plate that the caliper bracket bolts to was too close and the piston was hitting it. Maybe when I switched to the hydroboost system it was enough to actually bend the 1/8" plate and jam against the rotor. I never thought to check it for clearance and didn't realize the rear brakes weren't working to their potential. Anyway, I ground down the plate a bit and straightened them, so should be good to go. I ordered the same for the front.

You can see where the old piston was hitting the plate.

Scrappy, any chance you can get a shot looking out at the caliper mount on the axle tube?
