We'll have to see... It's more of a disassembly thread right now. I haven't made enough progress... But man do I have the boxes of parts ready for when it goes back together. :)

-Geoff

Mud is full of cruiser-heads that enjoy a good disassembly just as much as a reassembly. Just sayin'

And yeah, I've been accumulating boxes of parts as well that will go on once I get the repaint done.

Packing in new grease

Using the 60 series knuckles

Backing plates in

Quick question for you... back when you did this upgrade, did you use the 60-series birfields? Or are these the original from the 45 itself? A lot of the write-ups I see for using the parts from a 60-series or mini-truck include using the birfields from the donor rig and grinding out the inside of the axle ball.

Joel

The birfs are original from the 45. Did not change them. The knuckles, backing plates, and everything outside of that are from the 60. Is there a reason the writes are recommending to use the 60 brifs? Are they stronger? I'd imagine that would be necessary if your running larger tires and/or do heavy wheeling?

Did you do your swap yet?

I think the reason they recommend this is because, in the North American market, drums were associated with the old coarse six-spline birfs. But both yours, and mine, have fine splines on the outer birfs. So I think I'm fine... As you were. The 60-series hubs require fine splines.

Did not know that! Learn something new every day.

Haven't swapped yet. Actually, someone stole one of my knuckle/hub sets. So I have to hunt down another set.

That sucks…Are 60 series' common in the UAE?

No, but as @maxofarabia has managed to discover, apparently there are sources for axles.
I kinda got screwed on price when I bought my first set... I'm going to hit up his new source for a whole new 60-series axle.

We need to start a Whatsapp group so it's easier to spam with pictures. The junkyard in Sharjah has a LOT of stuff. They even have some of the 73 series with FRP tops that I've never seen anywhere but Yemen before. Also they have some cruisers with diesels if you are so inclined. As for axles, they are stacked ceiling high in leaning towers of death.

And since we've dredged up this thread I think some pics of the Troopie are overdue. ;)

Ha! She's currently sitting in the garage all dusty. I really need to give her a wash and take her out for a spin. I sprained my right wrist in the gym a few days ago (don't ask), so shifting that 4 speed is going to be a painful exercise.....Not that I would want to anyway in this heat.

That's sweet that you get JDM imported stuff at the yards! What an awesome variety!

Re the whatsapp group, great idea, as long as we stick to Cruisers. Please no religious sermons or p*rn, we get enough of that, sometimes both in the same group..

Been driving the troopy now every day for nearly a month. The weather has been cooperating, and everything has been working in tip top, save for the PS reservoir leaking slight drops when parked.

Just yesterday I finally managed to upgrade my lights to LEDs, and they're excellent. Fit like a glove!

LED's installed. Literally a simple plug and play

Boozwz,

Your Troopie is fantastic, hats off! Hadn't seen this thread before. One (somewhat unrelated) question: i am considering the same LED headlamps you have installed. I am wondering if they have the built-in daytime running light feature please.

Just saw this thread, you have a gorgeous troopy there. Your thread brought me back several decades.

I lived north of Jeddah back in the 80's in Yanbu, we made bi-monthly trips to Jeddah to shop. Alot of fond memories seeing FJ40's and FJ45's roaming the desert. My father had an '80 Nissan Patrol, we spent many weekends camping by the Red Sea. Always wondered what it's like there these days.

Thanks again for sharing.

Nice lights! Love these troopy's.

Thank you sir. Your Troppy aint bad either!

Re the day time running light feature, I am not sure how that would work. Do you mean the lights would turn on if you have the setting on "auto" regardless whether its dark or light out?

Cheers
