If I'm not mistaken, there is a little on/off switch similar to what is on a refrigerator door that operates your brake light. Look up under the dash. It probably needs an adjustment. Thanks for the pics. You have an awsome truck!

I think troopies have the floor mounted hand brake and the cable goes to a drum style park brake mounted on the rear of the transfer case like older '40s.
There should be a brake light on-off button under the hand brake handle that needs adjustment unless that wire is getting grounded somewhere else.

You got the holy graille of land cruisers there!

All I can say is Great Job ! It has been 24 years since I owned a 2F

Update

Its been some time since I've posted on the Troopy.

The weather has been fantastic lately, so out she came. The boys had planned an over night camping trip at a wadi not far from home. With raining lashing us in the north and central parts of the country, we expected the area to be filled with water as its a known rain collection area. In fact there is a big dam recently built thats collecting it, and the man made lake is about 10km long.

Since I planned on sleeping inside, I installed a mosquito net on both rear sliding windows.

Prepped and ready

Stopped by Mcladin, who was doing some last minute prep on his chopped 40 trailer, which is about to head out on its maiden voyage.

He's all set and ready. His build is still in progress. He just had a basic set up for this trip (build thread is in trailer section)

On the road

Didn't get many pics of the camp site at night as we got in after sunset and were busy getting the BBQ going.

My simple sleeping quarters for the night

Fiddling with some long exposure shots

Nothing beats fresh air and a clear sky

An attempt at some fancy light work

This was the view that greeted us the next morning.

Mcladins sweet 1982 FJ40

The boys digging into breakfast

After breaking camp, we set off in search of the lake behind the dam

Our first water crossing

The view from the cab

The engine was blowing a lot of white smoke that morning, and was feeling a touch weak. As soon as we hit the water, the revs started coming down, and in 1st gear, pedal to the floor, it just would not pick up any revs. Eventually the motor cut.

Getting some help

After getting pulled out, turned the engine over, after several attempts, and again put the pedal to the floor to clear the exhaust from water

And emptied out the cab

A bit further down the trail the rock formations were getting interesting

So we decided to have a crack at it

I must say I was delighted, and impressed that the Troopy was able to get up here

After getting up there, and reversing down, I lost the tail light. oh well, this truck wasn't built for driving to the mall:steer:

The place is filled with water

In the end we ran out of time and had to make our way home

The white smoke has me worried, as it blows heavily on start up, and thats after a good several attempts at cranking her over. It takes about 10 mins of driving for the smoke to disappear. So will be checking it out over the next few weeks

Till then:cheers:

Gents, I posted up a year and a half ago about a 40 that I purchased in the eastern province. Politics at work got really bad and I was ready to make a quick exit to my job in the US so I sold it back to the guy. I know where it is and it's very clean... Truthfully, I wish I could strike a deal with someone that would purchase and ship to me in the US.

Just throwing it out there...

Best regards,
John

just read the entire thread...
  • love the troopy!!!
  • love the wife
  • and the photographs

I'm looking to start on a FJ-45 myself; still negotiating with the owner & wife! I have a lot of similar questions; never really did anything like this before. The pictures are a good reference.

I noticed you got parts from SOR & CCOT; but were you also able to source parts from the local Toyota dealer? I know old-FJ's are still running across the border; maybe you can make road trip. Dahran is only 4 hrs!

Cheers

Love the Troopy. Great pictures also...

Thank you for the kind words fellas. Much appreciated.

Weber Sarge, yes if I am not mistaken, the GCC spec 4* series came with the crank handles. I've seen youtube clips of guys here in KSA starting their trucks with the handles. My 45 did not come with them, or if they did, none of the levers or clips were there when I got it. I've also noticed on the 60 series trucks, there's an opening under the grille big enough to stick a starting handle through it. Do the US 60's have those openings too?

yes the US spec 60's(and I think 62) have the opening, but the crank will not fit as the radiator blocks it, seems odd the US spec stuff got a deeper radiator....but must have for some reason

It's just another oddity in different markets - seems all models after around '72 no longer got the clips or brackets and that elusive front bumper guide , although the screws for the clips and holes in the front bumper are there . Just lacking the parts on the 4* series here in the US . Many of us , myself included - rely on these old trucks for self-sustainability in this vast country . A jump start in any basic city can set you back more than a day's wages , let alone out on some lonely trail that no tow service will even chance traversing to rescue a poor soul that left the lights on . I fabricate things , even tools so I made my own crank handle just mostly for fun . Threw it in the back and let it rattle around for the last year until early this spring and had a battery cable issue one night after work . This job site is hard to get into , it belongs to a utility and is off-limits to the public - not to mention the rest of the crew had left and I had to lock the gate on the way out . Turn the key and nothing on the starter - but I had power for lighting and such so knew it would at least feed the distributor and coil - good enough so I hand cranked it over . Two pumps on the throttle , choke out half way and 1/3 stroke on the starting handle and it fired just fine . Pulled out my home built handle , smiled and tossed it back into the back of the Cruiser and enjoyed somewhat hearing it rattle around all the way home on a fairly cold night . Saved me a half mile walk through muck and the dark - that handle deserves a permanent home in the Cruiser and I feel many others are the same way .

Time for a nice little update.

Got me self a set of 40 series power steering kit from the junkyard. Originally the troopy came without PS, and at the time I upgraded (at the behest of a few members) to a mini truck box and a GM pump. While it worked fine, it wasn't until I jumped into @Mcladin FJ40 with his recently upgraded 40 PS kit did I realize the massive difference in the turning ability of the 40 kit versus the mini truck/GM pump combo, especially considering he's running 33X12 X15 tires compared to my 255/85/16 narrower profile pizza cutters. That, coupled with the opportunity to go all original on the upgrade made the decision to pull the trigger easy.

Some may ask why I didn't do that from the beginning. Well I wasn't familiar with the junkyards at the time, and the ones I did hit never really had much. It wasn't until mcladin got his set, did we find a nice and reliable source, who would actually call us the moment a 4* series turned up with its fate resigned to being taken apart.

So with the kit I got the PS pump, the steering box, the PS lines, crank pulley, and the shorter steering column and steering wheel. The kit was taken off of a 1982 FJ45 pickup.

While I was at it, I picked up a set of 60 series front disc brakes.
