Has anyone successfully relocated the two in-line cats to be located between the transmission and the frame, as opposed to the stock location (on the outside of the frame)? When I say “successful”, I mean, not throwing codes, adding excessive heat where it should not be, and any other ill-effects of making the change.

My main reason for wanting to do this is for better clearance underneath, and not have the slider “skid” hang down so much… basically, the passenger side to be identical to the drivers side.

You go over the frame after cats...or cat after you ditch one.

Why not just install one small cat?

You can go over the frame with 3" tube and still have clearance without a body lift. Also do single cat then muff inside the frame.

@kc_chevota did it when he went turbo......... I don't know if he has pics.

i relocated mine to the scrapper :D
Man, I wish!! unfortunately I'm in CA, so need the cats :)

Would it still pass the emissions test with a single cat?

My other thought was to route the pipe on the inside of the frame, but that would require moving both cats backwards (away from the engine by @2 feet max), and lengthening the O2 sensor wires. My exhaust guy said that this might not work, as the cats may not get hot enough to work properly (as they are further away from the engine). Is this true... how about wrapping the exhaust pipe with insulating tape from the header up to the cats?

As @Dragos80 mentioned the easiest way is to cut and turn the cats 90 degrees, then route the exhaust over the frame to the muffler.

My cats have never stopped me from getting to the finish line or even slowed me down for that matter. My cat armor hast taken hard hits (wakes the wife up quickly) and it shows, but never snagged me up enough to cause me to think about re-engineering the exhaust system.
More lift and 37’ tires will provide more overall benefit and be much more fun than fussing with the exhaust system IMO.

So, it’s not true that the 80 likes a cat in the system to run its best? I have read this on some site where Land Cruiser enthusiast share there knowledge and experience.

I did the Magnaflow Y pipe with the single horizontal cat. I had a custom exhaust done by a speed shop for a few hundred sheckles. Over the frame rail after the cat, into the stock muffler tucked up higher, and exit behind the right rear tire.
He cut in a new O2 bung so I have the 2 OEM O2 sensors.
No codes, passes NJ inspection, and fantastic ground clearance.
I added a custom skid plate for the cat and the lower part of the down pipe bend.

Pictures????

Dual Magnaflow cats on mine turned and up higher than the frame. Still have the stupid tailpipe under the frame though. It's smashed at the moment so I'm trying to get that fixed soon.

So, all of these modified setups will pass smog in Similar Valley??

mine has PAIR, EGR, Cats, ABS, LSPV and several other things removed and runs like a champ.

I tossed mine with my gas motor I hate cat's

How much horse power did you gain? MPG?

Here are a few I just snapped. Pipes are getting a little crusty now.

This is passenger side profile. The front edge of the stock muffler gets tagged once in a while, but mostly out of the way.

This is the rear passenger side exit point, looping over the rear frame rail and cut just above the rear bumper wing.

Cat protection plate. Bolted to a flange welded on the inside of the slider, to the IPOR skid plate, and a front stringer to a captive nut on the frame rail. Very stout.
