Step up to a 10$ harbour freight hvlp gun, use a good single stage, i like dupont centari, buy a good reporator and rubber gloves. the black centarri on my crew cab is 8 years old and looks great, never been waxed or garaged, 2 stage is nice for repairs but for durability a good old school single stage wotks,

As info appliance paint is acrilic enamel in a can. The black is great for small parts and the almond is perfect for the bezel and roof..

The VIN plaque should be on the passenger's fender below the battery, held on with two sheet metal screws. I don't have a picture but have 10/75 76 model and that is where it is. The paint code is on that plaque. Missed the seat belt bracket on the hard top side first time I looked at the pictures, that top is off a 77 model with the seat belt bracket and vent window. Yours would only have lap belts since the three point didn't start until 1/76.

Mines a 10/75 truck too.
Wonder how close they are?
Here's a pic of the tag we're taking about (original tag to my truck but different fender.)

Depending on where you are going with your build, here is another paint option.
GCI offers paint in a few pre-mixed drab colors in bulk and in rattle cans for restoration of military vehicles.
I have not bought any of this to know how it applies with a spray gun but they give some application tips on the site.
Army Jeep Parts - GCI Paint

I'm considering this as a lower cost option for my next project mainly because it is $38 per gallon as compared to around $150 / gallon for auto paint.
I probably spent $500 - $600 on auto paint, reducer, catalyst, primer, etc. for my 40.
With the GCI paint I'd expect paint , primer, a few rattle cans and thinner to come in between $100 - $150
Having the same paint in spray cans for small parts would be a big plus.

For single stage auto paint I've had decent results out of a $50 two gun gravity feed kit from Harbor Freight, #94572.
Again, I don't know how they would handle the GCI paint.

Though I would give an update on the Redneck 40. She is coming along nicely. Have painted dash and door jams etc and have dash almost back together. Floor panels scraped, sanded and in prime, heater back in. Under hood, all new hoses, water pump, t-stat and cleaned up. Top parts and amb door parts are on the way along with front door rebuild stuff. A lot to do.

Raining today and thinking about tires and wheels. The truck is SOA and the po said it had 35s on it when he got it and he got rid of them for some reason, no power steering probably. The current wheels are all warped and the tires are 31 and 12 years old. The wheel balance weights have hit the tie rod ends at some point. Having read for hours on here I really like the tall skinny look and like the idea of the stock, new oem wheels and hubcaps, the problem is I am thinking of those 33x9.5x15 tires that I guess are no longer available. So the question is what Available Tire would you run on those wheels for the tall skinny look? Thanks for your thoughts ,all appreciated.

Nice looking 40

Today I decided to tackle the hardtop sides, been dreading the chore . Before pics show how bad the rust is. Cut out rust area, cut out and fitted metal I took from old bottom door replacements. Fitted and grind, fit and grind, weld, hammer, fit and grind some more. Welded up and grind some more. Need to clean up and prime to protect project. It was a pretty day in LA(lower Al). Tomorrow is a new day with the 40 waiting. Life is good.

Those look pretty gross.

I like that post: Life is good.

:-)

You have a cool truck. I like that you're enjoying it.

After scraping a coat of paint off of inside of the hardtop panels, the paint was flaking off in places, there seemed to be a black sticky tar like substance under the paint. Took the panel to a body shop and asked, what is it and how to get off? Stuff was some kind of undercoat and for me to use lacquer thinner to get off with a lot of elbow grease. Back at house decided to take wing window out so sprayed a little PB Blaster on screws as I used the thinner to get the tar off. After I noticed that the tar had released where the blaster spray was I started using that and cleaned the whole panel in about an hour. With the thinner it was going to take at least a day of work. One happy camper!!!

@Adog, I just saw this thread. Welcome to Mud. My son lives in Andy and is a coach at Andalusia HS so I realize where your forum name probably comes from. I may be down there in a couple of weeks.

You got it. If you send me a message when you are coming, maybe we can get together and you can see the Redneck 40. Thanks for the encouraging words.
