Looks good Wayne, you sure know how to make it look easy!

Joel.

What did you do with the brace (lj78) that was attached to the crossmember?

i do like this look...

Yah the 1 1/4 '' tube, I asuming it helps distribute the force of the lower 1 1/4 " tube ( which orientates the front axel side to side). Sorry for the non tech description, I'm sure it has a name.

Joel.

with the engine out i will be extending it to the far frame. i wanted to make sure it would not be interfering with the oil pan or travel.
cheers

Hmm... Time to start IH8Crushers.com (YA BASTID!!!) :grinpimp:

Wayne: you have too much fun ! You are building "My" truck! Or, my planned eventual truck, (after I get through the 3 Bj60's and the Bj70 and the FJ40 that are floating around my yard now). Maybe in 10 years you will be bored of the truck and I can pick it up on the cheap from you instead of building my own, because I know 10 years after you build this truck, it will still rock!!

Crew cab tray back veggie powered south america explorer..... Did I mention I hate you? :p

I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Maybe one of these days I'll actually have 3 minutes to spare and I'll come down for a visit with Mike...

IH8Crushers (LOL!!)

10 years? sad to say i will be bored of it long before then.

try for the 27th, that is the shake down run day.

thanks for the compliments.

a bunch of piddly crap done today.
like Beislebub i wanted the heavier 3 bolt clutch master and booster. this means 4 holes instead of 2 and the center hole in the body is too small.
so, i made a piece of 1/4" flat stock drilled and tapped the outer two holes and centered the center pilot hole for the hole saw. did i need to do it this way? no. a reamer would have worked as well.

the internal clutch booster... pretty cool idea.
the clutch pedal support.
i thought i took more pics of the install but i guess i got carried away with the "fun" of sticking my bit mitts under the dash trying to fit different pieces.
the 4WD control will not fit with the clutch support so it needs to be moved.
you need to remove the steering wheel and twist and fiddle to get the bracket in place. once in place then the rest is a cake walk.

lookie at what showed up today... the dobbinson lift.
it is out of my old LJ78 i sold to Dan at 4wheel auto in Edmonton. i mentioned i wanted the kit and he pulled it out of the old LJ, boxed it up and shipped it down for dirt cheap.
<of course i tried to score the e/locker out of the back but it was already sold>
the redundant 2LTE engine controller, up for sale.
the 4 WD control that i still need.

elect controlled shocks up for sale as is the stock springs (excellent shape)
the steering wheel waiting to be reinstalled
i wanted to use the HD steering box but the ball joint doesn't even come close to fitting. too small on the LJ78.

the clutch booster installed.
you also need to change out the brake pedal since the automatic one is too wide to accept the clutch pedal beside it.

that is it for today, if all goes well then the engine will be back in the frame and the elec will be attached.

still need to do:
install engine
hook up elec senders
install the gauge package
install the lift kit
install the exhaust
paint and install the front clip
install winch and bumper
install the proper tires

take for test run.

i would suggest that anyone that wants to do this swap locate at least a half cut or a complete donor rig. 3B, 13BT, HZ, PZ, HDT will fit. there is lots of options out there to replace the 2LTE. i would STRONGLY suggest the donor rig be a 70 series platform for ease of installation.

A bj70 cdn would be great for this swap - and could make it a LHD if one was so inclined.

How did the 1HZ in the other LJ78 do at highway speeds and the 4.88's? How high were the revs at 100kms/hr? What size tires?

not sure, i took it for a 5 min run up the back road. it pulled a steep hill like it was still flat and i was sold on the conversion (+ his 5th was not working for me) so that was enough to turn around at that point. he had stockish tires. Louis, you would love his truck!!

i have the 35s sitting here so i am thinking mechanical over drive since i don't have 5th gear (R141) and the speed limit is 80 k/h here.

The syncros into 5th are shot, so a little rev and it will pop in. The Truck has 285 75 16's, but doing about 90 ish the engine is definately humming along ( no tach).

Wayne you think a set of 35's would fit under a 2" lift? I've defineately been pondering this, to help with the top speed.

Joel.

well. in test installed the lift kit and bounced the front end with just the engine installed (no fenders, no rad or coolant or batteries etc) and i am not even close to being happy. extremely unhappy seems to be my feelings right now. i will install the shocks today and see. i might look at some 80 sereis springs.
i know i can run 36" skinny tractor tires on a LJ78 with the 2 1/2" lift and 34s skinny will fit with no lift on a LJ78 but the width of the 35 might be the downfall. a 35X9.5 will fit but i don't know anyone that sells that size without doing a search.

Joel, what front springs did you end up using?

re: the lift - you are unhappy because if is not giving you anything close the the lift you need?

or perhaps better to say that you are not getting any lift at all relative to the stock springs with the PZ installed?

Im curious if anyone has a link to a chart of various weights of the toyota engines (PZ, HZ, 3B, etc vs LT)

I just picked up my 1HZ with h55 transmission and transfer case packed in a steel framed crate with wooden sides top and bottom. The whole thing weighed exactly 990 pounds, the crate with steel and wood was atleast 100-150 pounds, transfer case weighs about 85 pounds iirc, so the tranny and engine would come in at around 750, what does an h55f weigh - maybe 200? that would put the engine at 550 pounds? That would make the 1PZ about 475-500 I bet.
