Bruce,
problem with side bars right away is when i go to extend the frame... i guess i could cut and extend them too...

probably good advice to heed.

louis, nice find.

Most newer toyota alternators swap in with very little mods, I sold a toyota diesel fork lift alternator to an FZJ80 owner and all he had to do was change the pulley - bolted right in.

My truck will be getting one of those ebay units in the spring.

Hi Wayne,
You'll probably be done before I ever will be:frown: I did not notice if you fitted the fenders on first to properly place the front frame part. If you haven't maybe it would be a good idea to fit the fenders firts??? I did the frame thing the same way, just I cut the drivers side farther back since it has the holes for the steering pump so I would not have to make new holes for that.
For those that don't know I am also swapping the LJ-78 to left hand drive so my needs are a little different.
Waiting to close on our new house in Anchorage so I can get back to working on the 78.

rusty and i measured, remeasured, next morning remeasured, tacked and measured again.
we are withing 1/16th of factory HD measurements...

but time will tell for sure.

i HAVE to get it done before i lose interest in the project altogether...

Hello,

That tube can take a lot of abuse. Ask me how I know.

Nice project, it is looking good. Way to go Wayne!

It is kind of sad, however, to see the PZJ70 go. She was a good rig, so to speak. On the other hand, a PZJ78 will surely kick ass...

Wayne is in no way shape or fashion emotionally attached to anything that is not living....

Me on the other hand - I had to go inside when he was chopping the front off of the PZ70 frame....

I couldnt watch.

It was like this time back in elementary school, our old dog Tuckey had got really sick.....
the dog was crippled and couldnt move and then one day dad carried his Ruger Single Six and the dog outside......

once Wayne chopped it off I had no problem dressing the edges and drilling the holes for the internal plate..... but I prefer not to have any part of any frame cutting

Hello Rusty,

I went though a similar ordeal years ago, when Buck, my faithful dog, fell ill and had to be euthanized. I could not bear it when the vet came and did it, but later I realized it was time to say good bye and bury him. And so I did.

When I was younger, Grandpa chopped his 1964 FJ40's top to convert it from hard top to rag top. I could not bear that either, but once it was done and the rag top was in place I helped to set it up. Later I helped with other mods, understanding the Cruiser's tough simplicity in the process.

not much done today, the wife was home and it was a beautiful day so we took the dogs for a coupel walks and enjoyed it. there will not be many left before the snow flies.

to make a quick tranny mount i took the auto and lined it up with the manual. the inner holes lined up perfectly.
i cut the ends off the auto tranny mount and welded them to the manual with reinforcing 1/4" braces.

it fit perfectly.

simple and effective.

when i go to chop the truck i will make a cleaner looking mount.

so as was suggested i test fitted the fenders and rad/rad support
the HD fender
the LD fender
the fit after trimming
IMG_1316.webp
IMG_1317.webp
IMG_1321.webp

the fender to door (rough fit, one bolt)
the fender to support at front (pretty darn good)
the engine bay

the fan to cowling

so once the fenders were test fitted then they were removed, rad removed and the tranny mount bolted down tight with the tranny attached.
then the engine mounts were located on the frame and marked for welding
then the mounts were removed and the area cleaned of grease and paint
then reinstalled and lowered into place for tacking
then the engine was unbloted from the mounts and the tranny mount was removed.
the engine was hosted back out of the bay
the engine mounts were welded in place and left to cool for cleaning on thursday.

tomorrow i am taking the wife to a anniversary outing so no work will be completed.

chat again on thursday.

5 hours today.

Good. Make sure you sleep in on Thursday cause I'll be there Thursday night to brainstorm on the double cab project. I found another frame to splice with mine and stretch it to an Aussie style 6x6 and I found a pooched LJ78.

I just need to figure how to mate a Cummins to a ZF six speed to a Rover LT230 case.

Save me a spot on the couch.

Damn, seems that those LJ's were the best thing that ever happened to cruiser builders.

awesome work wayne!
the j78 is in my opinion very disearable because of the coil suspension; with the pz motor, even better.
what other plans do you have to offroad-ize the pzj78? like lift or tires? that truck with your bumber/winch and the tractor tires muhaha...

Bruce,
we always have a bed for you.
see you thursday.

Louis,
might as well do something with them. the LJ is a sleeper rig all it needs is a decent motor to wake it up.

Lost,
i have:
a 80 series front elec locker sitting on the shelf waiting patiently for an application.
i have a lokka locker for the rear diff sitting on the shelf
it is already snorkeled (you know how i like water crossings)
the lift should be here today or thursday. small 2 1/2" dobbinson. i ran this lift on my last LJ78 test/wheeling rig and i could get air on the trails west of Calgary and come down so nice and soft and controlled. (i ran a OME kit on the blue LJ78 and a Dovvinson on the brown LJ78 for comparrison and although the OME is a nice lift the Dobbinson is WAY nicer)
i have the 2.48 gears in the t/case, the R141, the factory 4.90 and a turbo, intercooled PZ so it should be able to lug to 400 rpm off road and 4700 on the highway (if ever needed). i will be running the small winters ice radials OR the 35" fats... not sure which.

all these is rudementry, it is "what the hell color do i paint it?" that is the important question.
i have a gallon of this: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/coolfj40_2077_130040184
i can do it the factory 2 tone for now
or any color i want.

i might just paint it the 2 tone for now just to get the truck back on the road before the snow flies. then when i do the bob maybe
the green: http://wathiifm.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/photo-0185.jpg
or mustard yellow: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Toyota_Land_Cruiser_HZJ76HV_001.jpg
or olive brown: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/coolfj40_2077_129876016
although orange looks pretty cool: http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa152/SaWebs/DSC01859web.jpg
then of course i could just do it basic white and call it a day...

(i have always liked the desert tan but i painted too many vehicles that color and lost the ... originality and rarity that drew me to that color)

although 2 tone green looks good
or even 2 tone olive
<but with the roof white>

Def stay with the orig two tone colour looks boss as
or white.. but then it will just look like a aus ex mining duel cab 7x series

i am thinking, instead of modifying the rear door itself (although i LOVE the look of the original idea) the "fill and extend" makes good sense since you are not "re-inventing the wheel".
... not sure on this yet, ...
