Well follow up to my head gasket posts, finally got around to testing the coolant for exhaust gases with one of the rental testers from the parts store. I have no idea how accurate these are, but she changed color pretty dang quick, so I'm gonna lean towards definitely a blown HG.

In just one Windrock trip, about 3/4 of a tank of gas, she consumed enough coolant that it's down in the fins and can't be seen through the cap. So guess it's time to organize my garage and stick her on roller tires to fit through the door!

Fortunately I was planning to do one anyway out of an abundance of caution, since the original engine in this thing died in a glorious head gasket blowing on I-40 back in 2018.

And I don't have to have the 80 until GSMTR in June, so I'll just drag my 40 to Alabama next month.

This is a post purely because I just figured this out and felt that it was an interesting bit of info.

I'd been trying to figure out what the heck this thing was mounted on the side of my head. My first thought was secondary air injection. But I couldn't find anything out there about that on 80s. So I thought maybe it was like a California emissions spec. But don't think my 80 came from cali.

Well turns out I was right! I looked at the vacuum diagram on the hood and sure enough it is a secondary air injection valve, and it does say this meets Cali emission spec. Maybe other peoples 80s say that same thing. But it seems a lot less common to have this valve. So guess I better get with it and make it go away!

This is irrelevant to everything - but I just wanted to show off my blue toilet, arguably my favorite part of my house. And I would like to say how happy I am with the blue toilet seat I ordered off Amazon. The one that came on it when I bought the house was white at one point in its life, and just looked like crap, so I figured out my color code was Regal Blue after some internet sleuthing, and gambled on a toilet seat with free returns and it paid off! I'd say that's as perfect of a color match as you're gonna find on a toilet from 1962.

Get two new O2 sensors and put them into the manifold ports where the PAIR used to go. Disconnect the wires from the old O2 sensors (leave the old ones in as plugs) and swing the wiring up to the new O2 sensor locations and clip them in. Done.

This accomplishes two things. It gets rid of the failure-prone PAIR valve that will eventually start making "flubba, flubba" noises AND it gets your O2 sensors up high and living in a much better environment than down by the tire where they were, getting a constant bath of mud and water.

Brakleen cap fits perfectly in the unused nipple on the air cleaner top, or if you want to be fancy, cut off nipple and weld in a coin.

@40LandCruising In the good old days, you used to be able to buy colored toilet paper. I flushed a lot of pink and/or tan TP as a kid depending on where we lived! Pretty sure blue was an option, too.

That's what I think I'm gonna do, I haven't had O2 sensors plugged in for a very long time so maybe I can finally ditch the CEL and get slightly better MPG.
I used to consistently get about 11MPG when I owned the 80 before with the O2 sensors u plugged or plugged in, but I'm down to 7-9 now

Looking for input. I’m shopping for a new family hauler/tow rig to replace my 2003 LX470. Considering an Excursion 6.0 or a 05-14 2500 Suburban/Yukon XL.

Assume the Ford 6.0 either is or will be bulletproofed so I’m not taking those issues into consideration. I like driving uncommon trucks so the excursion stands out in that regard. I drove a very nice, rust free 6.0 Excursion today and liked it a lot. The 2500 Burb is the obvious comparison here. I owned a 2011 Tahoe 5.3 but that is my only ownership experience with GM trucks but I grew up in Expeditions from 1997-2007ish and always liked them.

Anyone have any real world feedback, advice, thoughts, sarcasm, jokes on either of these options?

I considered a diesel 2500 burb for a while, but just didn’t find the right one and moved on.

I know guys who have expeditions and love them. With that said, they’re still a fOrD. So they do fORd things. I can’t remember the highest mileage of the expeditions exactly, but think it was close to 200k. Given their age, I’d imagine a lot of what you’re looking at is close to this benchmark. Spend some time checking out the excursion/power stroke forums (I’m assuming that’s a work appropriate thing), and see what owners are b*tching about or common issues non owners wouldn’t experience. I think most model years left of the excursion don’t have any weird emissions stuff and most of those left probably (hopefully) have egr delete, etc. Post what you find/decide/whatever.

The diesel burb's are getting a little too old for me to want to drive daily at this point coming from a 100 series. I like the Ford interiors of the early 2000s more than the GM interiors which is another data point. I think they hold up better. My resident 6.0 expert @GLTHFJ60 has been answering some questions for me over the past few months in regards to the motor issues and fixes which has been very helpful. I know the 6.0 LS in the burb's are pretty reliable and the 8.1 are nice but parts for those are getting harder to find.

I have a 2001 Excursion with the v-10, It will pull anything. carries 8 very comfortably.
The only complaint is the gas milage, but it's a big heavy truck.

Bit different than what you've talked about but - Porsche Cayenne Diesel? How much towing capacity do you need? 2015-2016s got a 10 year powertrain warranty as part of dieselgate, they're not easy to find but if you want to daily an interested vehicle those are pretty interesting.

It’s more of a space need than a towing capacity need. Anything I’m considering has better towing than the LX
