The BOD has been discussing how best our NC club could help in Western North Carolina after the terrible destruction caused by hurricane Helene. After observing the massive individual efforts to send aid in the challenging first few weeks, and knowing how long aid will be needed, we decided to wait until there was a good, established framework in place for organization and distribution.

After speaking to locals directly affected in the area and also to various relief groups and volunteers, we have decided on sending $5000 to Samaritans Purse. Based in Boone, NC, they have a great history of assistance in disaster areas, and we are able to specify where our donated funds will go in order to keep them in NC. They also carry the highest rating from Charity Navigator.

This is definitely a large amount but the club is in a position to do this without severely affecting our operating budget. With the pleasure that Western North Carolina has given to probably almost every single one of us over the years, we feel that this donation is a great way that ONSC can give back to the fine people who call WNC home.

Very happy to hear this, hope it helps those most in need.

Very happy to see this. The folks up on the mountain are tough but need everything. We had minor damage here, large Pecan tree on the house but that was nothing compared to what they experienced up the mountain. We have a 3 acre property on the side of a mountain in Edneyville (just outside Hendersonville) with a house and garage on it. We expect severe damage. We have not gone up yet as there is really no point getting in the way of those that are living there and dealing with it. There is a stream in the valley below our property and expect most or all of the houses that were right up next to the stream to be in bad shape. We plan on heading up there some time in Dec, hopefully staying out of the local's way. To get to my place, two dead end roads leading to our 2/10 mile drive back to the property. I doubt we'll be able to drive in.

We're hoping for the best, Stan. And good for you for trying to stay out of the way of full time residents, though I'm not trying to minimize any damage you have up there. I stayed away from our lake house for as long as I did after the storm because I would have had to damage someone else's property to get to mine. It wasn't worth the risk for a place that we only have due to good timing and luck.

Thanks John, it is an investment property to us so we were about the same as you. Our drive cuts through several properties and is one lane only. So anything that is across it will either have to be removed or it will go down hill on someone else's property. If real bad I may have it logged, I am not cleaning up 3 acres on the side of a mountain, that would kill my old azzz. :)

This is why I belong to this club.

Thank you ONSC. I can say without question Samaritan's Purse made a positive impact in SE Buncombe where I live. They airlifted to Broad River FD, where I volunteer, 2 UTVs (ours was damaged by flood waters), 13 generators, and 1500 gallons of fuel, among other essential supplies. They also donated a weeks rental for a 56,000 lb trackhoe to help rebuild our private road. The generosity of so many, including ONSC, has been amazing.
