I like what you did on the tailgate. Need to do the same. WHat material is that and what did you use to secure it, some kind of large rivet? Any pics of that install?

Only pussies need templates!!! :flipoff2:

Hung out with DR GIL today to FINALLY finished my tailgate lid install. Figured that was a good time to see how cutting the sheet metal was going to be on the LX. It wasn't as smooth as I had hoped but I was more confident.

So my vents haven't arrived yet but Gil was awesome and gave me his set until my set finally came.

Couple of measurements. Some blue tape and a laser guided eye ball. My good arm is a precision instrument :flipoff2:

Eyeballed the holes, center punched them all and drilled. Each one landed spot on. We were both floored :D

So one side done and the other side for another day.

Now when I got home I had a nasty surprise waiting. The wifey was PISSED. Turns out I only "mentioned" adding vents was a good idea. I failed to mention I was GOING to carve up her hood. :(

Couple that with the fact that it's unpainted, it's held on with blue tape AND it's only one side :P

So now I need to hurry up and finish. :)

Wagongear sells the storage tailgates. His MUD name is kevinmrowland. Search tailgate lid or tailgate storage, or even wagongear. Good stuff, I "need" one too!

there is definitely a right and a wrong direction to install these in, esthetics wise... :)

I would also like to have a system where there are sliding slats on those so they can be closed when desired.

Wait...I can't tell if you are saying I did it right or wrong in the esthetics dept. :flippff2:

Adding a slider to close the vents would actually be pretty easy on the underside. Just get two pieces of Delrin or Aluminum with large slots in them. When you want them open, open the slots. When closed slide it to close the slots. I'm not going to do it until I see a compelling reason to.

I suppose that in extremely cold weather, it might be nice to close them off, but you could make a simple blockoff plate from something light that would just snap in place.

I agree and as my car (or perhaps any other diesel 80) does not seem to suffer from any overheating/running hot issues despite the weather now showing it's teeth (40 degrees by midday in July) aesthetic will be the way to go. 50 is not uncommon here and have yet to see any problems, I have plans to fit electric cooling fans as well as the vents. Of course this will go against the grain for me and perhaps cause psychological problems for which I will send Romer the bill. :D

Dave

Even easier, IF you got the factory drip trays with them - just screw them into the bottom, that due the the drip tray's crap design, that would just about seal them off. You could put a piece of something like cardboard (painted black) or dense foam rubber in between the vent and drip pan to compete it.

Do you mean like this? I don't run with these on but modded them up while doing the install.

I would guess that they would be handy in an extremely wet & cold environment.

Pretty happy. Although we only installed the vent on the passenger side I can notice a huge difference.

Wife and I driving right now to Vegas and coming up to Baker. It's 107 outside.

IA reads 107 and WT is at 193.

Typically we would be in the 140s for the IA temps and between 205 and 210 on the WT.

Huge win here.

Going up the grade at Halloran Springs Rd.

IA is now 130 and WT is 211

Just passed 8 vehicles overheating on the grade.

I thought I was on there one post before Romer, but whatever, as long as I get in line, I'm OK. Thanks, John
Boy, now that Romer and Nlxtacy are done, the list is getting shorter. I now have my vents in hand, so I am getting anxious. I am getting laid off on 1 August, so it would help fight my depression a great deal if I can get the template soon! John:grinpimp:

My plan is to come back on Monday and finish the other side. I will make a template then and post up a PDF that can be printed.

Update: sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in las Vegas on the freeway.

IA rocketed to 150 (not enough airflow). WT is 195.

Just started moving to 40mph.

IA plummeted to 132 and 190 on the WT.

Movement (airflow) is everything.

Edit: my wife actually said she was sorry for yelling at me for the vent. She loves the addition now. I WIN!!!

I am in SoCal...would you be willing to help me with this mod if I get my hands on some vents? Small fee? Food? Beer?

Nice pics and write ups. Here's a pic of my lumina vent I did a few yrs ago. Haven't decided if u want to do the ds side, but the ps definitely dumps a significant amt of heat that would normally be trapped. Probably helps out the SC as I haven't had any overheating. We'll see if I need any more interventions when I move to Tucson this may.

A couple more. I had been considering this wrx scoop along with an intercooler for the 97, but I think I might be better off with an air to water I/C so I don't know if ill end up using it.

That WRX scoop looks good. I have one waiting to go on with an IC.

DONE !! I took me a while to find the louvers, but it was worth it.

They look perfect, it is almost like they were made for the 80. They fit perfectly with the body lines, and also when the hole is cut it does not disturb the hood bracing.

As far as performance I don't have a lot to report, but I am going to Houston today and I am eager to see the performance at high speeds which is when I see my temps go up.

THANKS Rob for the template ! that thing is stupid proof !

Now it is my turn to pass it on to the next guy. Cannon88, please PM me your address

Thanks !
