Soooo....admittedly I’m a bit impatient. I got bored after the kids went to bed and started my carb tear down. Pretty straightforward while watching Pin Head’s video series and having read the FSM section a couple times. For as good as the truck had been running, I found a few interesting things....

LOTS of what looks like rust particles... I would say possibly from the gas tank, but I put a fuel filter in 3 weeks ago have run 2 tanks through it. It still looks as clean as when I pulled it out of the package.

This is where the fuel line attaches

2) there was no little ball in the check valve under the accelerator plunger sping

3) this random fat rubber o-ring looking thing was floating around in the bowl. Anyone know what it is? Nothing like that in Pin Head’s video and I’m having a hard time finding it in the parts schematic in the rebuild kit. @NeverGiveUpYota ...did you run across anything like this in your rebuild?

All finished though and ready for a dip!

That would normally sit on top of one venturi. It’s like a little donut gasket. I see two below the lower Venturi... was the one in the bowl a 3rd or one of those two?

No, there were just 2; 1 in the bowl and the other fell out of I don’t know where when I separated the air horn from the body. They were never on top of the venturis the first time I pulled the air cleaner assembly and looked in. Since the second one dropped out, I was focused on them going around a jet or in a hole with a spring.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully the next set of pics include a nice shiny rebuilt carb!

I don't see main jets removed in your pic? Did you get them out? FWIW don't get the check balls, jets main or secondaries, venturis mixed up. I found it much easier to get the check balls out with a slim punch with a strong magnet touching it as apposed to the tweezers that the FSM mention.

The jets you get to after removing the side bolts? Yes, they were removed. BTW, I'm only counting 2 check balls to be replaced...I'm assuming. Is that correct? The small one was missing when I pulled the retaining spring. All the other parts got marked/photographed in detail so I don't put them in the wrong place.

At this point, I have more pictures of this carb on my phone than I do of my kids

Yes two check balls smaller one is goes in the bottom of the plunger the other is the counter weight. this is described in the FSM with not so clear pictures.

Between the FSM and Pin Head's videos, it make pretty good sense...but yes, being able to zoom into a hi def picture sure would help!

If you have time, soak the parts in berrymans, ideally the strong one if your state allows it. Then rinse with carb cleaner or similar. Could also use brass brushes and a little polish to brighten up the body and add a little protection to the aluminum. I've had good luck with that with various carbs.

Have fun! I love rebuilding carbs. Also make sure your secondary arm is adjusted right, Pin_Heads videos cover it well.

Soaking in Berrymans as we speak...

"while I'm in there", I was planning on knocking out the secondary slow cut valve modification. Can't seem to find instructions for it though...just threads where it's referenced.

***EDIT*** Found the mod description buried in a thread. Time to get out the saw and drill.

Looking much better. Cleaned, rebuilt, and SSCV mod complete. I’ll wait until tomorrow to install and adjust.

Definitely part of the plan, but I didn't even know that was an option until I'd already blown the initial budget. The replacement wheels I ordered ended up not fitting so they are going back today. As soon as that refund hits, rear seat replacement takes priority!
What color is your seat cloth fabric? If it's the same as my 87's, (brown)I already converted my "non-headrest" rear seat back to one from a 62. I want to go back to the stock non-headrest seat back and would swap you straight across if you'd like, provided it's the same color and pattern as mine and doesn't have any rips, tears or bad stains. Mine is clean with no rips.

Again, I found a back rest from a 62, removed the fabric and swapped the fabric from my 60 to the back rest of a 62 along with the headrests. I can provide pictures.

Let me know!

Only issue would be if the fabric isn't the same color or shipping...I'm in CA.

In addition to pulling the carb and finishing the mirrors, I worked on a little electrical project. I grabbed some bits and pieces I had laying around and made a 12v work light. While I was out getting primer for the '85, I grabbed a cheap 12v socket splitter and 40 feet of wire. I chopped off the 2 receptacle ends of the splitter and added long leads with a couple marine LED lights I had.

Add a few connecters and some heat shrink....View attachment 2130821

Now I've got some LED lights that can reach from my 12v outlet on the back of the center console to just about anywhere on the truck. I just want to add some magnets to the backs of the lights and wrap the leads in something to help prevent tangling. Works pretty good.

Nice addition. You made your own Toyota trouble light. There was a factory one available which uses the factory trouble light plug under the dash:

Not as good as LED but I always thought it was cool Toyota made this from the factory. They thought of everything.

Wait...WHAT !?! I knew there was the trouble light for the FJ40, but had no idea about the plug you showed since I have yet to see an FJ60 tool kit with the light. I'm going to go take a look on mine!

I don’t think the tool kit on an FJ60 included the light.

Someone please correct me if this isn’t so.

I believe you’re correct. I’ve seen it as an additional item listed, but didn’t pay attention because I didn’t think the FJ60 was set up to use it.

Some FJ60s had that plug, others didn't. The lower dash panel part number changed in 4/85, but don't know if that was one of the changes.
