@FJ Noob Congrats on the new rig. Looks sweet.

Not to highjack this thread...
G-Man, I need to know more about that HAM in the Sandwich holder. I want that same set up.

Welded up a nut and washer for the B pillar mount and fished some wire down to pull it into place. Nailed it first time on the practice run, BUT I couldn't get it back out to apply the JB weld. The practice run became "go time". I spread some JB weld around the inside of the pillar hole as best I could, pulled the nut into place, quickly cleaned up squeeze-out, let it start setting up.

Decided the easiest mounting option was going to be "outside the pillar" using the huge reinforcing plate/washer supplied by Seatbelt Planet. Cur out a little bit to allow the plate to sit flush inside the pillar....

I’m a little behind on the rest of the pics & description because I’m taking a welding class at night all this week. Here are a couple more.

I cut a little bit of the panel backer out so I could slip just the vinyl behind the retractor for a clean look. It was a tight fit, so I went back and added a spacer between the sheet metal and retractor. When you pull the original lap belt retractors, there is a perfect little spacer on the bolt you can reuse.

Retractor installed...

The longest part was waiting for the JB weld to set fully so I could absolutely tighten down the top bolt without shearing the weld and getting stuck with a bolt I couldn’t tighten or loosen. Not a problem for you though!! With the right tools, I bet you could be done in 3 hours easy.

Finished up the seat belt install in the rear today...

Same process for the pillar bolt as before.

Just ended up making a couple cuts to bend the sheetmetal enough for the wiring to push back and let the belt retractor lay flat.

All finished and ready to go...

Headed out with everybody for the first time today. It is munchkin & puppy approved. (big sister was off kicking a$$ in her race and taking 1st place)

Time to take a little break and get ready for cruiser #2's arrival tomorrow!

If you’re going to be hauling munchkins, I highly suggest rear headrests. I was able to source a rear seat back from a 62 and it was a direct swap. The fabric is a match to a late model 60 series as well.

Definitely part of the plan, but I didn't even know that was an option until I'd already blown the initial budget. The replacement wheels I ordered ended up not fitting so they are going back today. As soon as that refund hits, rear seat replacement takes priority!

Here's a few updated shots of the interior...

Drvr/Pass USB ports

Hard to tell, but updated paint on all the plastic bits below the dash pad. I decided the leave the metal alone because it has a very subtle patina I like. Reminds me of all the grey Cold War metal furniture I grew up around visiting my dad at work (I know, weird). Also added the volt meter to the cig lighter hole. I actually dig the original green backlighting on the dash, so I'm sticking to green with any electronic updates up front.

Cleaned up the gauges and painted the gauge panel...

Great looking Cruiser and I'm loving the posts! Question. What paint color did you use for the lower dash? I have an 85 w/Same interior color and picking off projects as we speak! Yes, my first FJ60.

Also did you use any SEM (or similar) on the interior vinyl panels? Attached a pic of my rear - which is beat up a bit. Thank You!

Thanks for the kind words and congrats on your cruiser! I like the red with grey interior. Yes, I used mostly the SEM products. I used the MED GREY for all the plastic parts on the lower dash and SATIN BLACK for the ash tray, buttons, switch hole covers, etc. I also used the same color for the B and C pillar plastic covers and the piece that runs between them under the back windows. I started with SEM GRAPHITE GREY for the center console, but ran out because I messed it up and re-did it. I switched to Dupli-Color CHARCOAL GREY for the door and rear panels because nobody around here carries SEM brand.

It has worked out pretty well, but I followed the prep directions as written. I HIGHLY recommend getting the prep materials that go with whichever brand you decide to use.

Good luck and post up some pics when you get to it. It's a pretty awesome feeling to see the things freshened up and given a new life.

So, I think I've come to a decision point on Chloe. Today I had a 2nd FJ60 delivered (Project #2). Not a planned purchase, but stumbled across it here in the MUD classifieds and decided not to pass. I bought it sight unseen except for the pictures online; knowing it needed some extensive body work on the PS. Originally I thought #2 might end up being a donor for Chloe and then parted out. After receiving #2 and crawling over it for about an hour, I couldn't be happier. Besides the body work, the C-channels need attention and that's about all I could find. Granted it doesn't start, but who cares...I've already started dreaming about a diesel swap! Everything else looked pretty good. I think #2 is a great candidate to salvage as a restoration and not part out.

Back to Chloe...When I picked her up, she was even better than I remembered from my test drive. After cleaning her up a bit, I began to feel guilty building out such a nice stock specimen. I've decided to leave her that way. I'm going to harvest and swap the parts from #2 that are better than Chloe's current parts. No rock sliders, no fab'd bumpers, no cargo rack.... just a good looking stock FJ60 (minus the OME lift).

#2...this one...this is the one that I will not have a problem building out . It's going to take a while, but I'm sure it'll end up being worth it. Hell, my 2 girls (5 & 10) are already fighting over who's going to get which FJ...I had to remind them I'm not dead yet.

2 steps forward and 1 step back....

Harvested some good parts from FJ #2, but didn't finish installing them. I put some fluid in Chloe's rear bag and tried the washer out. Nothing on the window, but a nice steady stream of washer fluid coming out the rear through the headliner . Dried it up and called it a day. I'll chase tubing some other time.

Well...hard lesson learned. I pulled the two FJ62 mirrors from my donor truck to put on Chloe. While screwing around with the DS mirror to figure out how I could take it apart to refinish it, I broke the glass . Luckily, a quick web search brought me to this site for replacement mirror glass. Better than having to buy a whole assembly for a bunch more $$$, but my "free" mirrors just became $20 mirrors. Not bad in the grand scheme, but I'll definitely start slowing down and being a bit more patient when handling these 30+ yr old parts!

Small projects for a Monday evening. New rear light assembly, fuel filter, and glove box bulb installed!

You can replace your bulbs with LEDs. Game changer.

On your advice, I changed my interior dome lights to LED...yes, much nicer. Have you changed your dash lights over to LED? I thought about it until I remembered LEDs aren't dimmable. Is there something out there you can wire in to make them dimmable?

I have not as I don’t really like the idea of LEd lights on my 60 gauges. I believe I read some thread on this and the dimibilty issue has been worked out. I’ll do this eventually I suppose as the lights burn out.

I found some this morning that say they are dimmable. I'm going to give them a try. I'm sticking with green though. I'll update you after I get them installed.

You want to talk about a game changer, go with Speedhut Gauges

Oh yes...been drooling over those. Not putting them in this truck yet, but the #2 project truck will get them when it's time!

Had the day off so I gave Chloe some attention...

Installed the rock sliders I got from White Knuckle Offroad. I had decided that these would eventually go onto truck #2, but putting them on Chloe was a lot easier than finding a place to store them or continuing to trip over them in the garage. Should work pretty well as a step for the kids anyway.

Replaced my manifold to exhaust pipe gasket. Looks like I fixed the exhaust leak I found there while monkeying around with the carb.

Started re-finishing the FJ62 mirrors I harvested from truck #2.

Added some Seafoam to the gas tank. Carb acted up yesterday even after replacing the accelerator plunger that had a worn seal and the deteriorated rubber boot and running fine for a day and a half. The foam was on sale and I guess it can't hurt. Maybe it'll just help flush out any grungy parts until I have the time for a full carb rebuild.

Fingers crossed because we're about to load her up for the first family camping trip. Of course it's gonna drop into the 20's tonight...I'm sure we'll be fine ;)
