Mounting crap on an FJ55

Daaaang....

I just read through all that, as well as some of the links contained therein.

I think I'm going to start with some old Tanker solutions I learned during my first gig in the military. Something like a stretcher, with the handles cut off so it will fit to sleep on. It would be light, collapsible and removeable. I had one on my tank back in the day, and it was amazing.

I think I'm going to go from a tool bag, to a portable tool box like this:

Shadowbox that with foam, and tools will be easy to find and not roll around.

I've already responded as a volunteer to three natural disasters with Zeke, so I need to find a good place to mount my axe, shovel and extensive first aid kit. I may end up putting those on the spare using bungees and creative thinking.

I cook using my Dad's WWII military issue Coleman stove or in a fire pit, so I don't need that built in.

I got one of these ages ago for my 55:

Too bad they are not in stock. Maybe a call to Specter to see if they will carry them again.
Lucky enough to snag one of those in original Toyota plastic in a batch of parts I bought. Don't ask...it's in the keeper pile.

So after seeing 120mm's pic of the tire in the back I got a little worried. It looked snug and I know my back seats are further back than stock. And ya, it won't fit in mine unless I put the back uncomfortably forward. I guess I just assumed that was the place to go. I need figure out a solution.

Yeah, even with my 33" spare the back seat doesn't fit, it hits the fender latch. I moved the spare forward though in order to have excess to some storage behind tire. I don't use the rear seat anyhoo.

I was thinking it is a low volume tire that I want to put there. Maybe I keep in deflated so it fits, then hit it with a CO2 in the event I need it.

Better yet, mount it flat on the pig, remove and put the flat spot forward. 🤷

Do you need a hi lift jack all the time?

A simple bottle jack and a piece of 4x4 wood will allow a tire change.

I mounted my spare up on the rear cargo area wall too (33x10.5 BFG, so a small 33" tire), but on the passenger side.....cause of cruiser lean.

Storing it on the truck keeps it out of my already crowded shop, and makes it available for non-tire changing needs as well.

Plus, strapped on the floor behind the front seat makes it really accessible.

I'm not concerned about cruiser lean.

Did you replace the rear seat? Or modify the factory mounting?

I didn't need a rear seat no more. Tossed the bottom and gutted the top part. Saves weight and space and now i can put stuff in there.
