when running from the cops and hitting the spike strips?

The COPS tv show has many examples of tires catching fire when flat.

No, having runflats is a very good thing. I use runflats on Moonshine 100% of the time. My question is about that goo that's inside the tire. No idea why that's there or what benefit it has.

It's to be able to get you out of harms way during a firefight without catching the vehicle on fire.if your tires get shot up, you'll still be able to drive because It lubes the run flat surface against the inner tire rubber. You can supposedly do 50 miles at 50 mph with that . It's not necessary in our situations as much as it is in a war zone .

Gotcha, I didn't realize that it was only a fire retardant. That makes sense!!

Always carry a fire extinguisher I guess!
 
You don't want to try and put out a tire on fire Johnny. Nearly impossible with a little on board extinguisher.
 
Since the D60 swap, moonshine has had a bit of wander. This of course means that caster or toe is off, but toe had been checked, so the issue was narrowed down to caster. I measured the caster and found that I was between 0* and 1*, so I ordered up some 4* shims from WFO. Yesterday, we took the time to get the shims installed.

Ran into an issue right at the end. Somehow my tire now contacts the passenger side relay rod end. This is not possible after changing caster. I was thinking I'd order some spacers to fix this, but there's no way that this issue just came out of no-where.

I haven't put a straight-edge on the steering arms, but they're an inch thick. I highly doubt that they're bent.

I can double-check the tie and relay rods though.

I am going to go and actually tighten the lug nuts down on the wheel without changing anything else when I get home, then see if anything has changed. I'm thinking I just had a huge brain fart and this is a non-issue, that the only reason I thought there was an interference issue was because of the fact that I didn't tighten the lug nuts down.
 
So stupid question real quick. Most of the time when I see people put in caster shims, they usually just put in one shim with the fat side facing the drop shackle, but in your case you have 2 shims. Care to elaborate for me? Thanks!

The passenger side has two shims, one on top of the spring, one on the bottom, so that the top u-bolt plate sits parallel to the axle. This is necessary because the D60 has one u-bolt and two regular bolts for the PS spring perch. This is typical for Dana 60 front axles.

EDIT, further clarification: The fat part of the shim is towards the rear of the truck on purpose. This adds positive caster and is what I needed.
 
Awesome thanks for the clarification. From my understanding, the fat part of the shim goes towards front of truck on SUA and goes towards rear of truck on SOA.

As a general rule of thumb with, yes, but it really depends on the application. For example, on a truck that has a shackle reversal and SOA, the spring may be not parallel with the ground, but sloped up towards the front bumper. Thus, in order to maintain proper caster, you might have to put the fat part of the caster shim towards the front.

Long story short, it all depends.
 
So I'm a tard. I put the wheel on and tightened the lugs and everything is normal. Why did I think that there would be a clearance issue as a result of adding caster shims? No clue. Must have taken a tard pill yesterday.

Here's how much clearance the tire has to the TRE. Just as much as before.

She drives much better now! Wander seems to be entirely gone.

Next up? Shocks.
 
Just not in the rear! I've got a plan all worked out, to get some rear shocks before the trip to the beach this weekend. Already have the shocks in the shop :D

They are inboarded a bit more than I would prefer, but I used the stock shock crossmember to save on time and it worked out well! This should be obvious, but the difference in ride quality is incredible :D
