The Hood Support Rod Issue

Many of you already know the Hood Support Rod is located just above the exhaust manifold and it gets very hot to the point where it will burn your fingers while trying to open the hood and support it with the rod. While the rod is sizzling hot you prop the hood with one hand while the other hand is trying to withstand the burning sensation and trying to find the little hole to rest the rod into. In the process you burned yourself and scratched the surroundings of the rod hole rest, what a pain! So I came up with this solution.

First remove the support rod from the hood, while engine is cool, and place it on a vice and remove the cracked rubber grommet.

Then find your self a half inch hose the about six inches long and push over the rod

Like this and also replace the rubber grommet that goes on top of the rod
full

Then remove the rod from the vice and reinstall it like this

Then install a larger rubber grommet to the support rod hole like this
full

...and you are done scratching the paint and burning your fingers!

Then I used couple of hose clamps to keep the hose in place

Viola done!

Nice mod for the hood prop general purpose users ...

Mine is directly over the valve cover... No problem with heat :)

I hardly use mine ... Mr.T says I should rest it against the windshield and use the rod For 'general purpose' ... I have only had a handful of general purpose opportunities... So it's mostly against the roof :) LOL

Picked up couple of NATO Jerry cans and one Mil spec water can, will be hitting the trails tomorrow with the:princess:.

Cans are sitting on 1/4 inch isolation rubber to prevent road jarring damage.

Approximately how heavy are those NATO jerry cans?
The Toyota OEM one weighs over 14 lbs and that's without gas!

They are 12 Lbs each.

The wife and I went up to the peak of Green Mountain at Elev. 4,048' NGVD.
The 40 did great all the way up and down, total trip about 4.5 hours.

The terrain beat the snot out of my hitch basket can holder, one of the welds broke loose, only had about a 150 Lbs load on it.

From your other post , it looks as though that hitch section of the carrier is made from 1/8" tubing - it should be at least 3/16"-1/4" wall . That thin stuff isn't going to support that kind of weight . Also , look at the receiver on the truck - that is a lot of leverage force on the rear frame section - might have to beef it up a bit with heavier support braces .
