Making a fiberglass snorkel.

I have been thinking about what you said and have been thinking about ways to improve it.

What about cutting a part of the lower half (facing the windshield) and then add a new piece instead with a channel to guide the water out.
Something similar to the pic below. (sorry for one of the worst paint images in the world ;) )

This piece could be made from fiberglass or even thin aluminum and glued in place.

Thanks for your comments, I can see your point.

Do you have any suggestions how I can improve the snorkel?

I was thinking perhaps making a secondary cavity just a few inches from the linlet so that the air has to flow upwards before heading down the main tube (kinda like a pre-filter on a Safari Snorkel) :hhmm:

Here's my professional rendering lol ;)

Note the two dots would be drainage holes in the first cavity

However, your design is already so low profile that it might become restrictive if you try this

Genius

98 Snake really made me think last night so this morning I woke up early and went to the shop, cut a hole in the snorkel and made this aluminium channel.

And then I glued it in place, there are also two rivets holding it.

Later I removed the metal bracket and the screw holding it and filled the hole with a rivet.

This is a pic of it in its place taken from the air intake.

Now I really hope this snorkel is going to work properly and make me feel safe. After installing it on the rig, before connecting it to the air filter box I will make some experiments with a garden hose and see where the water goes.

Then I just kept on sanding, filling, sanding some more and painting to look for places to add filler. Then filling, sanding, filling, sanding and then finally priming.

Here you can see the water channel with the supporting bracket removed.

Then in the end of the day I painted it black. I decided to use high gloss black for now because I kind a want it to look obvious on the car for a while. That way I hope it will get someones attention and perhaps interest in buying a copy.

I also primed the holes on the fender to have everything ready for installation tomorrow ;)

shiny!

i don't think water will be an issue, think how much a safari snorkel gets when you're facing into driving rain. the hole is pretty small to be honest and there is a lot of air flowing to dry it out. then it gets to hit a paper filter and then be lifted out of the top of that. I would think with your design you'll be pretty safe.

WOW, thinking it up is definitely easier to do than the actual build...

As for your bottom drain hole/hose you can just have a tube with a cap on it... If nothing else, remember that the OEM air cleaner has a dirt trap in it and a water drain as well.

Thanks, yes I will have a tube and some kind of a tap or valve I can open to let the water out.
I have already closed hole and removed the "tuna can" from the air cleaner, I had to remove it to fit my intercooler pipes.

Looks good! Are you sure that the tube that goes through the fender is large enough to provide enough air to the engine?

It is the same size as the intake on the air filter can. The tube through the fender is the tightest part of the snorkel.

For a few years I have been using the same size pipe to extend the air intake up, closer to the firewall on my rig. I modified the air cleaner can so the intake in turning up to the firewall and then extended it with a plastic pipe same size as the one on the snorkel.

Now I will have to redo that mod or find a used stock air cleaner before I can connect the snorkel.

I´m not worried that it is to tight.

No good news of the snorkel tonight. I ran into some paint related problems today. I noticed a spot on the down side where the red primer was still visible. So I turned the snorkel on top to add some paint. Then when I turned it back there were some marks because the paint on top wasn´t fully dried. I sprayed fresh paint over that and now I have some "orange peel".

Well, the spray can says that if you want to add coats, you should to so within an hour or after 48 hours. It would have been great if I had read the manual a bit sooner.

I guess I will have to wait and let the paint fully cure before wet sanding the orange. Its probably best to wait for full 48 hours before trying to sand.

Am thinking about swingouts that can be completely removed - quickly & without tools. Just wonder if you hv a sketch/more detail pics, thks

I remembered that I had never answered that question.

My swingout is not removable without tools, I cant see how that would be possible to make it stable and removable without tools at the same time. I think you always need at least one bolt to make it stable.

I can remove the rack by loosen two bolts, one 19mm that holds the rack on the axle that comes from under the bumper and one 13mm that holds the pump that opens and keeps the rack open. But then the axle is still on the car, and it can be removed with 3 bolts.

I used 30mm axle, bent it 90 degrees and then welded some brackets to the tow harness to bolt it to. At first I did not make it strong enough, I could bend it by pushing the rack up or down. I had to weld some more to make it stronger. Because of this its not pretty if you look under the bumper but it works.

My next problem with this was that the 30 mm axle itself wasn´t stable enough with the rack open and two wheels. So I had to weld on some plates to make it stronger.
But now it is strong enough, does not seem to sway that much when open and carrying two bikes. It sways a little but not enough to make me worry about bending it by leaving it open with the bikes on.

I´m not using any bearings, I made a plastic and aluminum bushings for the hinge. I did not find any hinges with bearings like most of you in the US use in the shop here in Iceland. I´m going to see how this works out before ordering a real swing out hinge.

Ih8paint ;)

Today I wet sanded my orange skin paint, only to sand a bit to deep and sanded all the way through the primer.
So I sanded the whole piece and painted it again. And now I have a sign of orange everywhere.

I will see how it looks tomorrow and then decide if I sand it down again and try painting for the third time or just settle with a minor orange texture for a while.

Looks like painting is going to be the hardest part of this project.

YOu should have just linex'd it

Look'n good :)

That's what I plan on doing with mine (except Raptor liner, not Line-X)

I figure I'd go with an Iron Man snorkel and if it really turns out to be a cheaper plastic knock off (as Safari suggests), then the built in UV protectant of the bedliner should put an end to all the hype regarding the damaging effects of the sun's damaging rays :meh:

No I need it smooth and shining. If I decide to make a mold and make more of them. I need the finish to be as perfect as possible to make it easier to remove from the molds.

The finish looked really good the first time I painted it, but I did damage it.

I guess I will just install it like it is right now, and then when it is time to make a mold or I will work more on it or if I decide not to I will have a paint shop paint it blue.

group buy for haffi's snorkels to save on shipping anyone??

How much for a 6-pack of snorkels sir?

x2.... and could it be made with a bigger opening? the airflow kinda seems like it would be restricted by the size of the opening and intake
