Next up was first oil change. Oil about 15 years old based on last sticker. Sludge present in the oil plug cavity. With all that said- filter looked fantastic. Oil was jet black with no sparkle. Fresh oil and D3 filter going on. I will likely move to a bypass oil filter set up to really clean things up once she daily driver ready.

New oil change stickers... few year gap:

Next up was get the engine started. The clutch hydraulics were busted. Any compression of the clutch resulted in a 10" stream of brake fluid pushing the Clutch master cap off. This was replaced with Aisin goodies... this fixed the geyser situation. I was now able to crank the starter.

  • Clutch Master: AISIN CMT032
  • Slave Cylinder: AISIN CRT021

Next up was fuel. I drained the fuel tank and put fresh fuel in. Also changed the fuel filter. Next up was the Carb. The carb was in brutal shape due to ethanol and sitting off and on for many years. A hand towel shoved down the throat of it. I tore it down, cleaned out the crystals and sludge, and resealed it. This was only an effort to get it rolling under its own steam. The final carb would be @mattressking carb.

Original carb all junked up:

Next up was stopping, which is mandatory. New Brake master (BMT022), rebuilt and powder coated front calipers, and new rear brake cylinders (WCT011).

Gummed up calipers, with sticking seals:

Once I had her going and stopping, it was time to get her dialed in. This included lots of little odds and ends.

While pulling the intake and exhaust manifold to track down vac leaks and exhaust leaks... one thing caught my eye. The head gasket visually exposed was horrendous. Severe swelling and separating was occurring. Now would be the time to address with everything torn down for refresh... Down the rabbit hole we go. Turns out this would be lucky decision.

Here is a photo of the head gasket degradation:

Once the head was pulled, I took it to my trusty machinist who does top not work. What I thought was a pristine low mile head with 130K miles on it... turned out to have cracks the size of the grand canyon. This began my search for a late model 2F head. Casting number 61040. Dang these are getting hard to find.

While on my search for the 2F head, I was taking care of other engine bay accessories. One being the air filter housing. This unit filter wont be used though. I found a NOS cyclonic unit from the Pakistan / AFG area.

Between the fancy carb work, vapor honed valve cover, vapor honed intake, etc, I did not want to cover it up with the stock air filter housing. Instead, this will be used:

Filter housing. Good condition, but not perfect. If it was not NOS status, I would powder coat it:

Other items refreshed was the valve cover. It was coated with many years of oil build up. First was degreasing, then vapor blasting. Turned out great.

I cant stand having any busted or stripped threads around. Last mechanic busted 1 out of the 3 screws on the distributor. This called for a refresh. I plan to get this re-curved in the future.
  • Distributor cap: 19101-61102 / 19101-61240
  • Rotor: 19102-43060
  • Dust seal: 19127-61240
  • Disy Shaft Seal: 90099-14020

Busted screw location:

Very much enjoyed reading this far. I will be very excited to watch the progress. I picked up my 60 in Henrietta several years ago when I was stationed in Wichita Falls.

I had an '87 in that color for years and this story (especially the human aspects) was great. I sold my '87 to a friend and the truck met a tragic fate in a head-on collision (demolished the truck), but my friend survived. I now have an FJ62 which gives me all the 60 series I need. Thanks for the memories - best color ever!

Incredible story. And speaks volumes of your soul and character. Look forward to following along.
Curious where in East TX Lou lived. I wet to TJC for a year before I set off to Lubbock to finish school.
Thank you! Gun Barrel City Area

Appreciate it! Glad to hear your friend made it out.

I do love a 62 as well! Here is my 62 thread: FJ62 Revival, NM Truck Saved

Here are some photos of the engine head and valve cover after removal. Looks great for sitting 10+ sitting. Add in the presence of the two large engine head cracks (not known at the time of these photos)... I will take it. No gorilla snot coolant / oil mix. Sign that the cracks were only superficial.
