Let's swap a motor and do some other stuff to a 60.... (1 Viewer)

Lots of stuff came in today and yesterday......got our Champion radiator which was what I really wanted to see. Pretty cool aluminum radiator, fully welded...no glue. I'm gun-shy on aluminum radiators....seems in our street cars they are always an issue. I remember on the DINAN E46 M3s that we supercharged that they did an aluminum radiator for intercooler space....Steve Dinan was not a fan of the aluminum units. Prone to cracking apparently. We use them in track cars but that's different from daily drivers.

It's a nice piece and hopefully it holds up. Really nice for the price. They charged $60 to swap the outlet and petcock....not bad. This is a 3 core radiator as well. These are built to order I think.....took about 3 weeks to get it to me.

I think we'll have this, the intercooler and condenser coated with the ceramic heat rejection film. Not a fan of shiny stuff.

Our Odyssey battery showed up today.....fits like a glove AND will allow me to pass the line of the condenser between it and the radiator. Was thinking I might need to run that differently. Need to find a place for the drier still.....need to start thinking about AC piping too but first I want to get the airbox in to get an idea of how I will do AC lines.

I hate having to deal with fan shrouds on projects like these. They never turn out quite like my brain thinks they will. Fortunately the OEM 60 shroud is going to work perfectly....just rotated it 180 degrees....just like what other guys have done. We'll have to make a few minor adjustments but it will look like it was built for this setup. In hind sight, I should have had Champion not mount any inserts in the flanges for the shroud on the radiator. We could have done that and not had a bunch of holes. Maybe I'll pull out their nutserts and put new ones in where we need them. Minor issue.

Fan will line up right where I want it. Going to have to clearance around the drain now that it's moved inboard. Not really a big deal. We'll get the fan on tomorrow and make all this stuff line up.

Our clutch line had to move.....the starter is huge. We shifted it down to an unused mount under the truck....had to loop the rubber line. Fit's nicely.

That big starter also hit our oil pressure sending unit so that needs to be changed which we were going to do anyways. I don't want to hang a bunch of stuff off that brass fitting. We'll do the feed for the turbo off of it as it is now and then do a 4AN line up to a T that will have a factory pressure sending unit on one side and an aftermarket one on the other for my multifunction gauge. The digital gauge setup can monitor all kinds of stuff if it has the sensors....so we'll pop one in to watch oil pressure(as well as have a low pressure alarm set) a little more accurately than the OEM one.

That's the old line.....we had to make a new one today and it took 3 tries to get it right. Ha. I usually build the lines but I have passed the torch to my apprentice....it's his problem now.....he can be OCD over them.

the bar with a coil on it is a line?

This beauty came in today.....we've been using Diesel Fuel Injection Service in Portland for our rebuilds. Not cheap and not fast but they are like new when they come back....these guys seem to really go thru the pumps very thoroughly. This one will get a boost compensator on it before it goes on.

Bar with the coil is the steering shaft.....that's the boot that covers the slip joint. Wasn't sure what you were circling :)

ahhhh i see. ty. #GreatWork I go to Tampa every now + again for Tournaments at the HardRock, next time IM gnna ck out your shop :)

Stop on by and check it out. Always some neat stuff for Land Cruiser fans :)

Are you using the stock AC condenser? What size fittings go on it and the evaporator at the firewall? I have to do my AC system and order all the stainless fittings.
Coldhose.com seems to have the right fittings.....I'm going to order them next week I think. I want to say the large, low side hose is going to be a #10 M22 straight and the smaller high pressure is a #6 M14 straight. Could have those completely wrong.....not uncommon for me :)

This came in today......airbox from an 03 Silverado with the 6.6 Duramax. I think it will work for what I need. Not crazy about the look of it but it will flow really well and simplify things. I run OEM air cleaners in my other trucks with snorkel hooks up. We spend a lot of time modding those boxes to get as much flow thru them as we can.

I had some time today so I got to work chopping out the base to get it to sit low enough to fit under the hood. Had to put the hood on obviously which is good because I want to build my hood strut kit....going to use some of the parts from our 70 series kit for the 60.

I removed a WHOLE lot of the bottom to get it to fit. I'll probably fiberglass in the area I removed to seal up the bottom and contour it to the inner fender's shape.

Obviously we'll need to make a few mounts for it. Debating on removing the forward mount and building my own....it's not at the ideal angle and it's keeping the airbox just a tad too high. I've got a 4" to 3" 90* silicone elbow coming in.....that will transition to a 3" to 2.75" 90 into the turbo. I'll get those in and see how the airbox 'feels'......where it naturally wants to sit. Then we'll mount that sucker down.

Certainly not horrible looking under the hood....just different than what I'm used to. Kind of actually matches the valve and timing covers....

We mounted the new power steering cooler the other day....I didn't like the paperclip OEM one....looked kind of sloppy. We use this style on our other builds. Nice piece. Hoping to get both lines thru the hole in the frame. I think we'll be able to do it.

That looks cool (pun intended)! What brand and model is that? I really like that it doesn’t sit in front of the radiator.
It's a Derale 13280. We use 1/4NPT to 6AN fittings and then 6AN 90s for pushlock hose....one to the reservoir, one to the box. Pretty slippery and pricey slope once you start going down the AN path but it's a great leak-free setup that can be built to suit lengths you need.

Going to start looking at how feasible it is to build a really nice hood strut kit for these trucks. We have one for the 70 series trucks and I think I can adapt it to fit the 60s....we'll need a new bracket for the firewall area mount but I think I have it figured out. Going to test a few struts to see how they do once we fab up a quick bracket. Hopefully we can get them going pretty quick.

Fortunately the hinge portion of the 70 series stuff works on the 60 hood...that will help quite a bit.

That is a very nice hood strut kit, but isn't there a well documented way of adding hood struts to 60 hoods out there already? 2 struts, 2 ball mounts and use some existing 60 mounting holes.

Is the cost/complexity of a PS cooler needed on this build? Huge tires and/or prolonged fast paced steering in the future for this truck?

With the idea of running a smaller battery and sneaking AC lines through.....have you thought about 'future proofing' that setup in case a small/Odyssey battery isn't always available?
