Hello you guys and thanks so much for the valuble info. Just amazing the years of combined expertise on this Mud site. Very helpful. Want to ask a few more if you don't mind but first will answer yours. 1) Plans ie: " diamond in the rough " I PLAN TO WASH AND CLEAN THAT WONDERFUL CRUISER AND LEAVE HER ALONE. Once I get her up and running and in good health. Leave her be and enjoy that history sitting in front of me. And then,,,,,,,,," drop a damn V8 in there and put on some shiny wheels " ,,,,,,,,,Just kiddin. Seriously, I do NOT want to mess with that cruiser. Too much great history and to me, it looks like a piece of art the way it sits. 2) Your correct, those are the old pics that circulated MUD back a few years. I will be taking new ones once the cruiser arrives to California. 3) Bezel and Top COLORS. Since I ask the question on Mud the other day I found the 1961 Brochure that showed the same color top and Bezel lettering as mine. So, am wondering if Toyota used some of those same parts on the 1962 build. I noticed they did that with my BJ41 1980. They used the 1979 front mirror set up. What do you guys think. I am aware the you guys are the pro's though but please let me know if you have seen that 1961 brochure with the colored top and bezel. I also saw an old 1961 with a brown top and bezel as well. I am quite sure in 1961 and perhaps some in 1962 Toyota did colored tops and bezels on some. 4) The Fan: Thanks for that info. I saw another stock one with same fan but must have been a common aftermarket ad on used in the day. 5) I will certainly check the REAR PLATE DATE upon arrival. That would be interesting and will report. 6) Yes, a few years back the same cruiser was on C list and the asking price was $10k. Then a few weeks back the asking price was $8k. I was happy that I got it for much less. Not sure if I am allowed to say prices on the Forum so will just say I got a fair deal, win win for us both. 7) Yes, The grandpa past cruiser to grandson when he was 5 years old. Grandson now 20. His dad and he were co-title holders and decided to sell to assist in school fee's and so on. 8) Dad did break the column shifter in High School 36 years ago. It was replaced 36 years ago. Apparently there is some issue of downshifting easily from 3rd to 2nd which I will have to obviously have a look at. Thanks again you guys and will post pics when its all cleaned up and after a good shower. Who knows. Maybe getting it back on it's running feet will be easier rather then harder. Will try and wait to find all the correct stock parts if possible. Could be hard But,,,,it's fun all the same. FJFJFJ

I like your plans

The old Land Rover owners have worked towards maintaining the patina that their rigs have gathered over the years. Getting it cleaned up, and making it safe to drive as a '62 should be the first things, but don't just try to turn the key. Drop in some MMO each cylinder, and give the engine a chance to sit in it for a week or two before trying to start it. Restoring it, would have made it just like any other restored '62, and losing all its character. BTW, I've wondered about the bezel and top, and I thought that they were original, but just yellowed oddly with time. Will be interesting to see new pics when you get it home.

Then you'll have the old 9mm brakes, all the fluids, new tires (I wanted these tires for years...correct size, and look right on our old rigs http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Y742S) wipers...all fun stuff if you take your time, and enjoy the process.

I was worried you were going to take it apart to paint and restore, or worse yet, POR the frame, and powder coat parts...etc. Happy to hear that you will be cleaning it up, and getting it safe, but keeping it as is :beer:

I almost grabbed this one... The kid wanted a bit more than what I thought it was worth. Plus he never sent me the pics I asked for. Nice truck though. Keep her original!
Clemsoncruiser on mud might have a spare side / early three speed lying around.

Nice! A bit jealous over here!

You NEVER say that!

Ha ha ha...you are getting to know me too well :lol::lol:

He has good plans with leaving it as is, making it clean and safe, and protecting it. This is what I would have done had I purchased it a year ago. This is also what I would rather have done with my '64, but the PO put on some awful blue paint, and silver paint on the inside, then add to that it being too close to a barn fire, and I have no choice but to restore it...at least I am going as true stock as I can.

You know, this thread should give you tons of great pictures to finally get your '62 going ;)

I am oblivious to FJ's produced in the 60's, but is the door missing some sort of panel in this pic??

That is a stock door opening for the FJ25 and early FJ40. There is a handle the you use to slide the window up and down. Stock but not one of Toyota's better ideas.

I see the handle, but it also looks like there's a crank you can see along the bottom of the steering wheel. Is it a door handle or window crank? Again, I am in the dark when talking early model FJ40's.

Either way, I am gonna 100% believe the experts and say that the opening is a great place to put your candy wrappers:doh:.

That is a door handle to close the door. There is no window crank. Other little thing were different. Outside handle is not chromed. Inside handle is curved with no plastic cover. The striker on the B pillar is stamped steel and not a piece made out of soft metal designed to wear like the later ones.

Hey " My wife said no FJ ",,,,,,,,,,,,THOSE YOKAMAMA'S 4742S are just perfect man. Thanks for the heads up on those. What size were you going to use or suggest for this cruiser? I have never owned a 1962 and I am realizing already that there are a bunch of differences from other ones made after 1962. So, thanks for the info. Thanks also to everyone else and I am digesting all the counsel given. I just want to see it cleaned up and running as close to perfect as possible. Should be pretty cool. I still think that that Bezel and Roof are original color and just faded. Either that or the Dad was just mistaken but he seemed pretty sure of himself. Has anyone seen that 1961 brochure that shows the colored tops and bezel? I guess everyone has. I just noticed it and it sure looks the same. Anyway, look forward to getting it safely to California,,,,,,,,,,,,next week. FJFJFJ

700 R 15 is the correct tire size. If you want to see them on a 40, check out this great thread; https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/459720-moment-truth-coming-near-paint.html ...look at the end of the thread...
Chris and Destin both put some on their '64s, and they seem to love them :)

I have seen the old brochures also, but I never knew for sure if these drawings/pics ever went into production, or were just ideas. I have only ever seen them off white. I also thought that the bezel and cap on this '62 might have "yellowed" oddly in the barn, for whatever reason, so only once you get it home will we know for sure.

The vin number is- 2FJ4015829. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY IT SAYS "2" in front of the FJ. Thanks, fjfjfj

The #2 signifies the year model telling you it is a 1962...a 1963 would have had a #3, and 1964 had a #4, but oddly enough, '65 and '66 had no digits, but they had brass tags screwed together with the vin plate. BTW...'65 was the transition year from corrugated top models to the newer corner window top models...actually seems to have happened around summer 1965...just a bit more cruiser trivia for ya

Hello " My wife said no FJ " ,,,,,,,,,,,,,That cruiser you sent me to was wonderful. Just a beautiful cruiser. And yes, the Yokahama's looked perfect. Will go that route. Thanks for the other info also. Thanks again. FJFJFJ.

Very nice 1962 you picked up there FJFJFJ, looks pretty darn original. As for the top and bezel I am sad to say that is not a stock color, I have brochures from 57-62 and none of those tops shown are anything other than off white (lilly white I believe). Also your 62 has obviously been repainted at some point in it's life you can clearly see in the interior pictures where they painted blue over the lower steering column and the bottom of the turn signal swith, both of which should be black it also appears there is over spray on the fire wall. So it makes logical sense to me that the top and bezel likely were painted the present yellow at the time of repaint. Also on all of the '62s I have owned the "Land Cruiser" lettering in the bezel was painted red, yours is black which lends itself to my belief that it was a repaint.

None the less it is a great find and I hope you enjoy it greatly if you find yourself in need of parts let me know I have quite a few laying around:beer:

I'm looking forward to you getting it home and all cleaned up so you/we can get a better look, and can determine what was, or was not painted.

I do know by looking at the pics that the brake and clutch masters were changed :D

Fjfjfj / bezel / top / brake master 1962 fj40

So, I have uploaded the brochure from 1961. I made a mistake on the bezel in the 61 brochure. Somehow remember that it matched that one colored top lid. But, nope. Now, the top lid in that brochure is definitely not white in that one pic. So, it appears that Toyota did do a colored roof. Question is does that top lid color in the brochure look like my top lid color 50 years later? I agree with the comments. Just get her home and see. As far as the bezel goes, I guess that indeed has been painted. There might be an explanation. The owners, both Dad and Son said no, Grandpa never painted that cruiser,,,,,EVER. Father also said that cruiser was purchased that color, roof and bezel included. Then I asked about the neighbors down the road who bought the cruiser new 3 years earlier. He said they had 3 to choose from, that he was a HUNTER (clue) ,,,,,,,,,,. Then I thought wow, maybe the HUNTER painted the bezel orange for protection while hunting. I mean, that would not be too unreasonable to consider. He may have even painted the top orange ( if that what color it really is. I will see when delivered ) for protection while hunting. That area of Colordao, Steamboat Springs area has alot of wilderness area and lots of hunting so,,,,,,,,,who knows maybe this was all done in the name of safety. And it is wild cause the Bezel and Top colors are at least 49 years old. Father did say though that his dad NEVER painted anything on that cruiser. We shall see. Hey guys, if the Bezel and Top roof have been painted 49 years ago, do I change it or leave it. You guys know the rule, once you start painting a cruiser,,,,,,,,,,,,,what do you do from there? Thanks for any advice. What would you guys do? Thanks. FJFJFJ

Dude, relax.

No point discussing the color any more until you get it home, and get it cleaned up. Then, and only then can you study it deeper, and/or take it to a paint expert to decide. It could be all original, like it could be all repainted, just wait until you get it, and then take it from there
