Help, I'm in FJ40 door weatherstrip replacement hell

TLDR most of this thread.

I'll add my data point. I used @Racer65 / RacerCity weatherstripping and the VHB recommended here on the rear hatch of my 71. The two did not mix. VHB looks solid and felt sticky to the touch. But the weatherstripping and VHB did not adhere and just kept falling off.

So, now I will follow Racer's recommendations on the website this thread and report back. Wish I had found that earlier.
Did you clean the weatherstripping off first?
 
Well a few months later and as I was washing and waxing my rig I noticed that the top corner of the passenger side ambulance door weatherstripping has peeled away a little. I'm ordering some 8011 adhesive and I'll give it a go with the denatured alcohol and clips again. So fun, I can't wait to get this stuff all over and smell that awesome glue smell again! :confused: The good news is the double sided tape I used is pretty easy to remove. I will be re-reading Racer's tips on how to make this go smoother this time around.

I have looked into the use of VHB tape for EPDM when it first was identified on this thread. I went to the 3M website to see if 3M had a recommendation for this weatherstrip application.

While the 5952 tape appeared to fit the bill for weatherstrip applications, there were "warnings" about "LSE" (Low Surface Energy) surfaces for adhesion.

To make a long story short, I recently learned that 3M recommends a primer when VHB tape is used on EPDM surfaces. Details are included in the attached bulletin from 3M:

On the second page of this bulletin, I've extracted the recommendation for EPDM:

Are we ordering the VHB at .375 wide?

Yes that's the size I used for the rear ambulance doors. The front doors might require a slightly wider tape. Perhaps a wider tape would work better on the rear doors as well since it would have more surface area to hold the weatherstripping.

After looking at the areas where there was low adhesion between the tape and the weatherstripping, each area is either a corner or an area where the rubber wasn't able to be held on for any length of time with clips while it bonded. I'm not completely giving up on the tape idea... with the surface prep info posted by @73FJ40 above there could be an argument made that this is either just as good or better than the 8011 3M glue. My main reason for thinking this is how easy it is to apply.


If you use the surface prep info above and have good results, please post.

I am about to do the same for my rig and went to City Racers website since I bought the weatherstrip from him and his recommendation was clean with denatured alcohol and " Install new weatherstrip with 3M Black Weatherstrip Adhesive (available at auto stores and Amazon). Do not choose 3M "Super" Black adhesive, as it's not formulated for EPDM rubber." Cheers.
 
I also wish I had found this thread prior to my front doors gasket install. Many curse words were said, but I got the job done, mostly. If I could do it over, I would go the VHB tape route. The glue is hard to do neatly in my opinion, especially if working solo. Difficult to scrape off also.
 
@geoffnlp it maybe to late, but here’s my 2csnts.

I tried a number of solutions and 3m 08011 seemed to be tone best solution.
Prior to sticking stuff on, I “sealed” my rust with a round of clr&brillow then a clear coat of paint. Finally isopropyl and the adhesive.

Tailgate is a b*tch and I still haven’t found something that will keep the tailgate weatherstripping on. Worked well enough everywhere else and much better than the 3M tape nonsense.

I would recommend using painters tape prior to putting stuff down to get cleaner edges. The. Remove after a couple minutes and prior to hard set.
 
I did a little test before I attempt to fix some spots where the 3M is failing on my front doors and ambulance doors. This stuff seems legit. Applied a small amount to the rubber and held in place for 30 seconds and then let it sit for 10 minutes or so and this weather strip isn’t going anywhere. I can’t pull it off. This could be a good alternative to 3M. It’s a little more runny so I need to take it slow.

I wish I saw this 10 months ago.
Yeah crazy thing is I installed mine like everyone else did. Alcohol scuffed up the new city racer rubber apply taped it down and it was terrible. Corners falling off and would never stick. So I randomly watched this thinking how did they make it stick and why would this be the standard if it was so bad. After watching I peeled a piece off a time and did the protocol as seen here. i only applied it to the rubber since the door had a ton of it from before once dried I added a thin layer on the door over top of the 3m that had been there for a year and holy s*** it stuck. So I did this for Both doors. And it’s still sticking and good as new and still sticking even in the gaps where the rubbber doesn’t meet the jam, where it was always trouble sticking
 
Lot's of good info in this thread. I saw where the City Racer weatherstripping is confirmed as EPDM so I assume best to use 3M 08011 but I didn't see anyone confirm that Toyota OEM weatherstripping is also EPDM. Need to install some OEM weatherstripping on an FJ45 and wasn't sure if I should use 08011 or 08008. Seems that @Wadesters has always used the 08008 and I assume that is with OEM weatherstripping so maybe that's the answer?
