Oh, so that basically tells you the ECU is pooched.Because if the CEL is not on, the ECU is not in a ready state and there will be no spark. If the cel is not on, there's no need to crank the starter.

Not necessarily. Several things can cause the CEL not to illuminate. Basic lack of power to the ECU, a faulty AFM, fuse, etc.Oh, so that basically tells you the ECU is pooched.
I thought Rule #1 for the FJ80 was listen to @jonheld and ignore the people who obviously haven't read the entire post. Not referring to you. Seriously though guys, he had a running motor on starter fluid....obviously he had spark so why all the dizzy talk? Sounds like a fueling issue.Rule #1: ALWAYS check the fusible links first. ALWAYS. It is the easiest and most common cause for no CEL.
What do you mean by the fluid exchange method?Do the fluid exchange method in the transmission. Take 5 gallons of fluid but less overall time.
From the transmission cooler in front of the radiator, unhook one hose and install a long hose to run into a 5 gallons bucket. Mark the bucket for quart levels. I measured the height and divided by 20 to get quart dimension. What do you mean by the fluid exchange method?
