From Hundy to 2024 LC 250?

I've been a very happy Hundy owner for the past 10 yrs. My rig is an '03 with 210k miles on it that I picked up in 2013 with 88k miles. It's been fantastic to own. I started searching for the face lifted 2016+ 200 a couple of years ago, but it was hard to swallow $70k + for a used rig that in many cases already had signs of corrosion living in the salt belt.

My rig was $63k in 2003 which is $104k in today's dollars (insane). So, the 250 at $55K - $65K is interesting. It's still a lot of $, but I never thought I'd have the chance to buy a new LC.

Any other 100 owners considering taking the plunge on a 2024 LC?

I just got mine, and it looks quite similar to yours, did you get the bumpers color-matched aftermarket?

guys, a friendly reminder that this is not a thread about EVs and especially not the politics thereof...

Please correct me if I'm making the wrong assumption but you seem to be saying that Toyota has tarnished the Land Cruiser name by releasing the 250 with the nomenclature of Land Cruiser which is of lesser quality, reliability, capability, powerful, etc....... and this will in the long run hurt the Toyota and LC brand/legacy even if they sell more vehicles?

I guess time will tell.
Exactly.

Sales figures alone will not tell the whole story, though. The 250 will sell much better than the 200. And it will be a disservice to the brand.

brand engineering in the (USA) NA market. simple.
they'll sell a shedload.

market constraints aside, if they get to 1.9 or zero like the majors are clearly moving to, I would be hard pressed to say no, FOR MY WIFE!

Yep. We need to maintain our position of opulence and style here in the US. Remember the 1958 Thunderbird and subsequent generations?

I think some people are getting a bit emotional about this topic, but I also agree that it seems like a bit of a mistake to have a mythical nameplate have a seemingly underwhelming product attached to it. Other times this has happened it also seems like a mistake, the Ford Mustang II and the Cadillac Cimmaron come to mind. My preference would have been to preserve the Land Cruiser name by introducing the new 250 as a Lexus model and maybe still not resurrecting the Land Cruiser in the States. I guess I get why they don't bring the heavy duty 70s to the US, but I will be interested in the product differentiation between the 4Runners with the new 250. Like I said in a couple of years I will probably end up with a 250, but that would be instead of a Lexus NX, not in place of my 100.

Yup. Nobody remembers the subsequent T-Birds. And that is the point. The best late model T-Bird was a Mercury Cougar.

To be fair, I quit smoking last week. Brushing my teeth made me angry.

Haha, it's not just one person. Congrats on quitting, hope it gets easier for you.

What are the core attributes and values of the Land Cruiser brand? What made the Land Cruiser the legend it is?

I don't know... but fan groups like us made it a legend.

Average buyer of mid-size SUV (USA) and large SUV (rest of the world) doesn't know and care.
Some countries it's a prestige to own one. In some, it's a workforce. Or both on some. On the other hand, off-road and overland community is tiny compared to those markets.

In USA, biggest market is the 4x4 mall-crowler and soccer-mom community.

I'll give it a shot:
Point of Difference ------> Brand Benefit
  • Overbuilt --------> Legendary reliability
  • Well-engineered for street and off-road ------> Unmatched balance of on- and off-road capability
  • Design form follows function --------> Timeless good looks

Way back when....like early 90's. I wanted a Land Cruiser for several well rounded reasons that it comprised.....

-- Reliability
-- Heavy, tall and safe
-- Can pack in a family of six
-- Can drive in woods every day managing wildlife/timberland and vacate in style and comfort

Remember - we're looking for what made the Land Cruiser the legend it is. Gotta consider the 40, 60/62, 70, 80... What brand attributes (characteristics) apply to all of them. Factor for time, i.e., reliable for the period, comfortable for period, etc.

Why I bought a 100, it works for hundred of thousands of miles, or so we hope 🤣.

In the same boat.

I just calculated the cost of fuel to drive mine another 200k miles with $3.5 per gallon and 13mpg is $53,850. This is not just considering maintenance even 2 timing belts. Pretty close to a base model 250 :geek:

Mileage is the key here:

Assuming gas prices near me stay about $4.50 a gallon, for me to drive my 100 series another 100k miles will cost me about $32,000. I’d be saving about $16,000 in fuel costs alone over 5 years and the difference will keep going up especially adding up parts for the 100 as it ages (and timing belt/water pump). Tempting, but likely still doesn’t make up for the price at these interest rates.

But it does help with justifying at least some of the monthly payment knowing you are saving about $250 in fuel a month.
this comment hit me like a bus. I really did not need to hear that lmao. But at the end of the day, driving a car is expensive. For me the hundy is about smiles per mile more than practicality, and I suspect that it's the same for others on this forum

$55k base model 250 plus $50k for the same gas plus more insurance costs...aint too close.

Add the gas and maint. Costs in.

I think maintenance will be similar (w/o timing belt of course). And the LC250 will still burn gas, just at a slower rate.
