Guys, I’m looking for a 60 series. I’d like something that’s mechanically sound - I do plan to build it up for my use, but I can do that on my own over time. But as this will be a daily driver for me, I really don’t want to be dealing with issues with the motor, fuel or electrical systems. I want to start from a reliable base.

I’ve spotted this one here on eBay, and I honestly don’t know what a fair value would be for something like this that seems to have been completely restored. This looks immaculate to me, and I’m sure they spent more than the asking price on restoring it. Even though that may likely be the case, I still don’t want to overpay. What do you think something like this is worth?

Oh, and one more thing – I’m going back-and-forth with the seller on this asking questions. What questions do you recommend that I ask? He says it is equipped with the 4.0 L motor, but the listing describes the 4.2 L. So he may not be technically educated on this. I think he is a consignment seller.

Opinions and advice are much appreciated. Cheers!

I'd pass on it at that price, guy labels it a FJ62 but it's clearly an FJ60 and has South American budget restore written all over it.

I can assure you at $43k he's probably doubling his money on it. Check the classifieds here as there are some really nice, well sorted rigs for sale right now.

EDIT: Guess worldwide an 87 is considered an FJ62 but has the same body as a FJ60 with a 3F carbureted engine - my bad I didn't know that. I'd still stay far away from it though.

I'd pass on it too. Can't be sure if it's a 60 or 62. Yes, those are round headlights but might have swapped out the original 62 headlights? But yeah, the ad says, '87 so, seems like a 60.

The frame says FJ62, so it's clearly an FJ62. It's just kind of confusing because the FJ62 did not appear in the North American market until 1988, big changes being the square headlight facelift and the fuel-injected 3F-E - but 62s were sold in other markets earlier than that, with the carbed 3F, as has already been stated. Another interesting item to note is the lack of fender vents, which is something you usually see on the diesel 60s.

Anyway, it looks good on the surface, but is the opposite of what folks call an "honest rig." There are so many sad stories on this forum of people buying SA-market trucks that look good in pictures but are full of bondo and other dodgy repairs. For that money you can buy an enthusiast-owned 60 or 62 with a known, documented history. You'll be much better off in the long run.

Id rather have this one. A pretty well trusted member here @Tennessee80 has it listed. No engine bay pics but im sure hed send some over

Or how about this one? I know the seller personally and it’s a great - most importantly, honest - rig. There was very, very minimal rear wheel well rust that he had repaired, the thing was so solid even before that.

Wherever you wind up, do NOT buy a lipstick-on-a-pig truck. South American trucks can be ok, but it’s hard to find verification for the work, I wouldn’t buy one unless you can see it in person. Many that I have personally seen are pretty slapdash.

Ditto on that. Such a decent price too (imo - without having traveled to take a look see it drive etc) - I'd even deal with the smog issue (being from CA) over paying the 40k on the other

For the expectation requirements you have stated, an original North American FJ62 with no rust, OEM engine with reasonable mileage that runs well, solid transmission, and is in very good cosmetic condition (original or restored) is going to cost that much or more....easily. Lower pricing is going to be linear to how much work you will have to put into it. It's just the nature of the market and vehicle.
