If memory serves me correctly, my WMS to WMS using the 40 housing turned out to be 59.5". It was almost identical to the fj60 front axle.
Which is perfect for me. My goal was to be no wider than the front, since that can impact rear end tracking, or so I've read. I don't now how much that means on a truck that sees 90% off road and 10% asphalt.

Ok, final WMS to WMS is 58 7/8" (+/- 1/16"). So, assuming this: Stock WMS to WMS numbers.....(FAQ) is correct and the FJ40 front axle is 57", my front track width with 1.25" spacers will be 59.5" and the rear will be 5/8" narrower, which is within my goal.

The @lcwizard kit includes pucks machined to press into the ends of the housing and accept the Marlin seals.

Sorry I misunderstood.

No reason to run the bushings if you’re not running a birfield joint, the outer end of the axle will be supported by the hub insert that is running true with the hub bearings, the spindle bushing will only complicate things if your alignment isn’t perfect.

No worries, I was posting that for general info, in case the question came up.

I was thinking the same thing about the bushings... they would only cause potential issues and are unnecessary.

I keep meaning to post a thread to try to get to the bottom of that...the FAQs say fj60 is 60", but Cruiser Outfitters tech page says fj60 is 58.5 and fj62 is 60. Georg swears that the fj60 and 62 housings are the same width but doesn't claim to know off the top of his head the WMS#s...anyone watching this thread know the answer to this???

for years I thought it was a cut and dry 60" ala ih8mud FAQS, but when you go hunting the webs, the FAQS are about the only place that say the axle is that wide. most places(pirate, yotatech, cruiser outfitters...) say 58.5....that's a pretty large discrepancy if you ask me.

From the writing on the wall in my garage, FJ62 front is 60" and I have no reason to believe there is any difference between it and a FJ60. FJ62 rear is 57.5" and a FJ40 rear is 55".
I chose to use the FJ40 rear for my FF conversion so that it would not be wider than the FJ62 front axle.

was that based upon a measurement you took, or the FAQS? (please say measurement; please say measurement; please say measurement...) inquiring mind need to know...

Since we are talking about axle width, I think it is important to note here that while the 4plus brackets do fit perfectly on an unmolested axle flange, there is a 1/4" "lip" on the inboard end of the flange that the bracket butts up against. I ground this lip down to get the bracket as far inboard as possible to minimize the axle width and get it as close to the front width as possible. This process was inexact and resulted in the flange losing it's perfectly round, machined profile. This is where the alignment bar came in handy.
In retrospect, I probably could have ground the interior of the bracket to clear the lip, thereby retaining the self-squaring properties of the brackets.

Ok, now you guys have me scratching my head.:hmm: I built my front axle using a 60 housing (which I got from Georg) and @lcwizard 's 2 5/8" extender sleeve and IIRC my final WMS-WMS was around 61". This would make sense assuming the 58.5" FJ60 measurement, but not the 60". I would certainly would have remembered a number around 63".

I'm building a Dana 60 rear axle using concepts similar to the ones in this thread, using Dana 60 front spindles and hubs. I have one shot to get the width right, so I think I need to recheck the front axle to determine exactly what I have, then do some more math!

Maybe lcwizard will see this and chime in...

The Cruiser Outfitters tech page is incorrect. FJ60 and FJ62 axles have the same WMS at 58.5".

I'll measure mine tonight, it's been a few years now

so ih8mud FAQs are also incorrect...

front axle is also wider than the rear axle.

front axle is also wider than the rear axle.

Only by about .5" or so, right? That's what I can never remember.

1" on both sides.
