I tried all that stuff, only thing that worked for me was the carriage bolt trick, still have that tool sitting in my toolbox in case I ever have to do this again!

Not to sound like a dumbass, but would youplease explain this trick to me...I am curious....

yes he is.

Good luck. Sell me your cruiser after it's all in pieces. I'll take good care of it.

I don't know about all that........tricks to remove a pilot bearing hmm. I think those are great ideas if you are stuck in a rut. I bought the fancy puller and have used it 5-6 times and never looked back. :)

Can you remove and replace the pilot bearing without having to take anything else out, ie. trans, x-fer.

you can leave the bell housing and flywheel....everything has to come out.

Are you serious?

yes he is.

Not only that but the easiest way to drop the transmission/t-case is to remove the seats & gas tank and pull the transmission tunnel. If you have a roll cage you can use a chain hoist and a 4x4 to lower the trans/t-case out, otherwise an engine hoist will work. Use zip lock bags and a marker to keep all the screws and bolts in groups (ie.; seats, gas tank, tunnel etc.) and it's a lot easier to get back together. I can't even begin to explain how much easier it is to re-install the trans with the tunnel off.

After you do it a couple of times it's not so bad. I can pull my transmission in three hours from turning the first bolt. It takes about four hours to re-install with a helper. It's not a skill I would recomend needing to develop though.

I am in the process of tearing down the 1F to put in the 2F and this is what I found sitting in the flywheel. The race is still in the end of the crank:doh: Could that have caused a bit of chatter?

Hijack...

Does this look right?? This is the O'Reilly part number for a 1979 2F. Looks stout and nice but nothing like what I have seen in the past. #202SS

Looks like a pilot bearing to me. Fuzzy pic and all.;)

Yeah sorry - I've been drinkin. The ones I have seen the ball bearings were visible. Never seen one sealed quite like this.

Hell, its Saturday night on a holiday weekend!!!! They are supposed to be sealed.

read what I have said in this thread.. They are supposed to be sealed ;)

Sorry guys, that's a shielded bearing not a sealed bearing. These are sealed pilot bearings for a 2F.

Thanks for the clarification. I think the point was that you should not see any ball bearings, and that if something, a shield, seal or monkey fuzz, is not covering them, the "fill-it-with-grease-and-smack-a-dowel-with-a-BFH" trick will result in a grease facial.

I hate to resurrect an old thread but how did you get the race out of the end of your crankshaft Hugh Heifer?

I try to do "due diligence" and search for answers before asking questions but this @#$%^ outer race has got me stumped. The bearing fell apart when the transmission came out but I can't seem to get the outer race pulled. I have a slide hammer with a 2 armed puller that seems to "bite" fairly well, I just cant bring myself to keep hammering on the end of my crankshaft. I can't get this race to budge.:bang:

Before anyone answers grease, bread, wet newspaper, etc... I am already past that stage. There is no bearing there to pack stuff behind. I have tried numerous different style pullers and I have one that seems to grip but it is not moving this piece.

Any suggestions?
