Just took a maiden voyage around the block. Interesting ride. Power steering feels good. Rear locker made a bunch of noise. I'll need to get used to the H55F gearing and the 2FE torque.

Oh, thanks Steve!

Sweet!

The 2FE/H55f will certainly be a lot different in feel than your 4-runner. I know that if I drive my sister's truck (it's a '95 pickup) that going back to the faux-lux is like a whole new world (again).

so does this mean we'll see it Saturday? I hope so.

what do you have in the rear diff?

H41/H55f gearing is very different than H42 gearing. For on-road use I definitely see why Toyota used the H42 in the states. The H41/H55f reminds me of the tranny in my '95 f-350--1st gear is just a bit too low and 2nd is a bit too high for good starts. Maybe when I put 33s on it, 1st gear will be better, but my h42 with 33s really drives nice on the street.

Thats great! I am glad to hear you got it around the block at least. Hope to see it on Saturday or if not then soon.

Yes, I'm going to bring it Saturday. I have a No-Slip in the rear. My observations on the H55F are the same as yours. First is low, second is not low enough for a start, but almost. I suspect I will get used to it. It's not bad, just different.

I thought real men only uses second gear starts?

When I was looking for the "before" photo over on Yahoo, I ran across a long thread where there was a lot of discussion with some out-spoken club members trying to talk Jon out of doing a fuel injected engine. In the end, Jon wasn't deterred by the dissenters and that 3FE system on the 2F engine is absolutely perfect for his truck.

Geez, I just went over to Yahoo and reviewed that old thread. WOW! The quote that started it all:

"EFI Jon, EFI." - Juane, 31 January 2005

Have you watched the DVD yet?

SECOND gear is still too simple. Seriously, if it doesn't have two sticks it might as well be an automatic. ;)

PORN!

A few sexy calendar shots. It drives pretty good, but I did find myself holding up traffic. A race car it's not.

  • Love the tractor engine.
  • Love the low range on the Mark's gears, though I wasn't able to really test them.
  • The Mark's gears are noisy (whine).
  • The driver's door is loose and rattles. Should be an easy fix.
  • The rear tire rack is not as steady as I thought it would be.
  • The rear locker tosses the truck around when letting off the throttle.
  • I came back Unser and never went over 2000rpm @ about 50mph. The engine is really happy around 1500rpm.
  • The only serious issue was I noticed it was puking PS fluid.
  • Lots of heat off the floor.
  • I need to get fish-eye mirrors on the mirrors.

Very nice. That looks great, and even better now that it is out of the garage. All that other stuff doesn't matter. Minor details, seeing that it runs now and you can drive it.

Looks like a beauty, can't wait to see it!

I forgot about your Marks gears, that gives you some underdrive in high, too, right? I would think that would give you enough for second gear starts? Maybe not with 35s. You just have to get used to slow starts with that tranny, I think that's the reality of it.

I'm surprised you hold up traffic, though (except for 1st gear). I would think that motor pushes your rig pretty well, especially topless. My 40 feels like a hotrod when I take the top off. It's still slow, but noticeably faster than with the top.

Interesting that it's puking PS fluid. I would have thought that PS cooler, plus the lines across the front crossmember would have easily cooled it enough. Is there any airflow across it in it's location outside the radiator core support?

Since I'm sort of working on the same thing, I'd just as soon that yours irons out it's issues before I have to finish mine off. ;)

That looks really, really good on the road. Really good.

I think the PS leak was a loose/stripped clamp. The clamp on the gear box return line would not tighten down so I replaced it. I'm going to take it for a putt this morning and see what happens.

On another front ... a buddy in CA emailed me and offered me another project. A 1969 Nissan Patrol. I could have matching 1969 classics. Problem is I've seen that POS. I don't think they have the part sources LCs do. It would be fun though.

This isn't the truck, but it is a 1969 Patrol:

"Nice Jeep." It only took two days, and it sounded good, so good.

"It's a Toyota, sir." :grinpimp:

There's no way I'd build a Patrol close to stock. There is absolutely no support from Nissan and not much aftermarket. It would end up with a toyota or chevy powertrain, I'm sure. I think Mike Keenan has an RHD patrol on Central. I know of one out beside a barn near Vegas (NM) too. Might be had cheap.

BTW, you have a beautiful jeep :) Thanks for the ride, that drivetrain is awesome, I don't see how you were holding up traffic with that.

She looks good Pappy! You should be very proud indeed.

I wonder if your PS fluid will overflow out of the res a little bit until everything had a chance to get warm and expand? I see that you found the source of the leak but keep an eye on the level.

Jon:

That truck is beautiful on the street (I can't imagine what it will be like on a trail). Especially at night it was pretty cool seeing it running along near us. Your turn signals on the back were especially cool when they came on.

Were they bright enough? I was concerned because they don't look like much during the day. I'm looking at a LED lamp with three bulbs.

A few observations.

Either this truck is getting better, or I'm getting used to it. I know the ECU needs to learn a few things, but the more I drive it the more giddy-up it has.

I'm getting used to the H55F. I just need to run through first and second quickly and get into third. This tranny is absolutely a truck transmission. The shift point on this engine is 1800-2000rpm. Significantly lower than my 4Runner.

I calibrated the speedometer with the GPS (push a button, drive two miles, push a button). Running 2000rpm makes the truck go 55mph in 5th gear.

I love the Flowmaster.

When you drive a truck like this who needs a girlfriend?

At night they absolutely are.

not sure about during the day. My red LED brake lights are much brighter during the day than I thought they would be, and I'd suspect your amber turn signals also would be.

If your running ovals (looked like it from the pics), might even check out the 48 bulb units. Our club members say they have no problem seeing my rig through the dust. In fact, I even had a complaint about how bright the brake lights were.
